Royals' "But every song's like gold teeth, grey goose, trippin' in the bathroom / Blood stains, ball gowns, trashin' the hotel room" is basically Price Tag's "And it wasn't low blows and video hoes / Am I the only one getting... tired?", so yes, they do work on the same subjects.
I can, however, see the difference you imply - Royals is more "no, thanks, we're cool enough as it is". And anyway its Tumblr teen angst doesn't feel fresh either.
