If you look at its closest chart neighbors on Pop airplay, Birthday is among the worst selling, particularly among the non-recurrent songs.
But maybe I'm just being a pessimist. Or stupid. Both are quite possible. At this point though this situation seems so bizarre I don't even know what to make of any of its sudden gains. I don't think it's just the iTunes "hot songs" promo or the weekend effect.

Did you miss the part where I was simply warning a user not to get too cocky about Birthday's sudden gains so they don't make a fool of themselves if it doesn't actually become a smash hit.
