Who is Cassie?
Cassie exploded onto the music scene in 2006 like a breathe of fresh air. Her lead single “Me & U” which was helmed by producer Ryan Leslie, peaked at the #3 spot on the U.S. Billboard Hot Hundreds, where it remained for an exhaustive amount of time.
The songbird followed up with her debut album ‘Me & U’ which landed at the #4 spot on the US Billboard 200 and sold an impressive 100,374 copies sold in its first week.
She captivated us with not only her voice but with her trendsetting looks and sick fashion sense.
After releasing her first album, Cassie disappeared from music, but now she’s back!
She recently dropped “King Of Hearts,” the first single off of her upcoming sophomore album and from the sound of things, she’s ready to shake things up.
SheSoMajor had the opportunity to chat with Cas, who we must say is one of the sweetest, most down to earth people we’ve had the pleasure of interviewing.
It’s been 6 years since you hit the scene with your self-titled debut album, how did you know this was the right time to drop your sophomore album?
Cassie: I think it’s just all in the feeling and I’ve definitely been very patient and worked very hard over the past three or four years to create something that people are going to enjoy. It’s just a feeling. It’s nothing out of the blue because I have been working hard and I think that everything happens for a reason and everything happens in its own time.
How would you say your musical style has evolved over the past few years?
Cassie: Oh, it’s evolved a lot. Just over creating the album, I went through different stages of trying new things and just trying to find where I wanted to be and where I wanted to fit in and it’s now gotten to a place where I think it’s the perfect reflection of who I am right now. I wanted to create something that me and my friends will want to listen to when we’re getting ready to go out.
What can we expect from your upcoming album. Any special features that may shock us?
Cassie: Um, you know I’ve worked with Rico Love, John Baptiste, Danja, these are all producers and writers but the newest feature that I have right now that I think is kind of interesting is Jeezy. It’s a little big different.
Do you have a title for your sophomore album and when can we expect it to be released?
Cassie: I have secured a name. I’m going to actually announce it. I have a new site, CassieSuper.com, it’s a kind of like a fan fused site. So, we add different tumblers of fans so that when they post things they show up as a live feed on the site. So I’m going to make my announcement of the album title and why I called it that on the site and we’re looking to have it out in September.
‘The King of Hearts’ is the lead single off your album. What do you look for in a ‘king’?
Cassie: In a king? A king, a king, a king. Well, I would have to say my king, my perfect king (laughs) would always have to make me laugh. Sometimes stuff gets really serious and it’s important to have laughter and fun in a relationship. I want my king to have his own. I’m gonna have my own so he needs to have his own.
It should all be balanced out?
Cassie: Yes, everything needs to be balanced out. I think it’s important in a relationship with any two people that you have to balance each other out. You have to have your own things going on.
During those years that you had ‘off’ from music, what was Cassie up to. Anything interesting?
Cassie: Well, when there were points when I was maybe doing something else, I was always creating music. I was always in the studio. So I never really stopped but I definitely took some time out for myself. “Me and You” being six years ago I was 19, I was 18 when it really came out. That’s kinda crazy because I’m 25 now. It’s been quite a long time.
You’ve stuck it through and remained relevant and that’s very important.
Cassie: At the end of the day, I feel like, I don’t like forcing myself on people. I’ve never been that kind of person. I’m just way more laid back then that and I think that there’s a lot said for keeping a mystery actually. You know what I mean? It’s been quite a while and people have been involved in and out, weaving in and out of my life and been slightly understanding. I think one thing that people don’t get to do and they don’t know about me, which I’m excited about, is they don’t get to hear me speak. They don’t get to hear me tell them who I am so that’s something I’m excited about.
Speaking of mystery! You’re a pretty low key and private person, somewhat mysterious. We don’t see you on the celeb scene much. Tell us something about you that many people don’t know.
Cassie: I’m fun. I’m a lot of fun. (laughs) If I’m going out with my girlfriends or whatever but I’m a homebody. I like to just stay home and watch movies and just hang out whether it be with my friends or whoever. I like to just chill. What I do when I’m New York with my girlfriends they come over, we cook dinner, we drink wine, we hang out, we just chill and talk.
Just regular girly stuff.
Cassie: Yeah, I’m a regular 25-year-old at the end of the day.
When it comes to fashion, where does your creativity come from? Because a lot of people love your look.
Cassie: Um, wow! That’s a really good question. Nobody has ever asked me that before. I’m just inspired by anything that I see, other people. I think a really cool tool that people are using now is Tumblr and you can search anything on Tumblr. You can follow somebody that just has a great eye. So, I just get inspiration from all over. I’ll sit on my computer for hours and just go online and make huge files of just pictures. I think it’s good to just keep your creative juices flowing, especially as an artist. So that’s something that I really enjoying doing because it keeps me calm.
What are some of your favorite brands?
Cassie: The brand that I’m addicted to right now is definitely Isabel Marant. You know what ended up happening. I shop at certain places and stuff like that but I never really look at the labels. So sometimes when people ask me what I’m wearing, I have no idea because I just wear what I like. Then I finally realized that I was buying a lot of stuff from this designer (Isabel Marant), I was like ‘okay, wait a minute. I’m obviously a fan’. I thought I was buying different things from different people (laughs). She has these really dope, well, my favorite jeans from her are these tight white low cute jeans but they have this aztec colorful rainbow print on the side. It’s like dope. I’m wearing one of her sneakers right now actually.
In an interview Ryan Leslie said you were his favorite artist to work with and would love to work with you again. Would you be down for a collaboration in the near future?
Cassie: It’s definitely something I’ve thought of and we’ve met a couple of times in the past couple of years and um, you know, we’re both working on our own separate things but I’m always open to that collaboration.
What makes Cassie MAJOR?
Cassie: What makes me major? OMG, you know what’s so funny? That’s my makeup artist’s favorite word. She’s always like “That’s maajooor.” She’s always saying that. So what makes me major? I think once people take the time and they finally get to know me, my personality is MAJOR!
We can’t wait to hear more from Cassie! We’re definitely rooting for her!
