14 weeks "We Belong Together", just Marian Carey; 1.7 million digital downloads early in digital era
16 weeks "One Sweet Day" Mariah Carey and Boys to Men, both lead artists; 2.3-2.4 million physical singles sales from December 1995 througb 1996 (all in 1996 Chart Year); very impressive, but the song fell fairly fast.
Then "Macarena (Bayside Boys Remix) sold 3.5 to 4 million physical singles in 1996 and early 1997 and spent its 14 weeks at #1 and fell slower, topping "One Sweet Day" for the #1 Song of the Year in 1996. The "Macarena (Remix)" actually stalled at 45 in 1995, spending 20 weeks on the Hot 100 and selling about 500k physical copies then. That's why it holds the overall record, 33 weeks, for the slowest climb to #1 (13 weeks in 1996 after 20 weeks in 1995) on the Hot 100. That song sold 4.2-4.4 million physical copies. Remember a physical copy is worth roughly two downloads when comparing the hits of the physical era to the digital era.
As close as "All Of Me" came last year in one trip (31 weeks) and with the continued increase in the number of these slow rising sleeping monster hits crossing over from format to format, I think "Macarena's" record will be broken before the end of 2016.
