Overview
Spotify continued to rapidly grow in March 2016, which saw two distinct boosts in streaming activity following the releases of Kendrick Lamar's untitled unmastered and ZAYN's Mind of Mine. March 5th, the day after Lamar's release, was the biggest day of the month, breaking total plays records for the top 50, top 100, and top 200. March 26th, the day after ZAYN's release, saw 97 songs record over 200,000 plays, obliterating the previous record of 87 set on the 12th. While activity remained somewhat stagnant near the top of the charts, with the average total plays value of the top 10 actually decreasing from February, overall activity surged. Just five days featured less than 70 songs above the 200,000 mark, a decrease from 17 in February. Additionally, the top 200 recorded at least 45M total plays on 21 different occasions, up from 13 in February.
Monday updates, as always, easily recorded the lowest streaming figures. The average total plays of the T50 on Mondays was 21.44M. In contrast, it was 23.55M on non-Monday weekdays and 25.11M on weekends. Furthermore, on Mondays the average amount of songs to eclipse 100,000 streams was 174, with the highest mark being 179 (reached on both the 7th and the 28th). On non-Monday weekdays, the entire top 200 was above 100,000 plays 63% of the time, and when it was not the average amount was 194. 7 out of 8 weekends featured the entire T200 above 100,000 plays.
The month saw a relative lull in activity between the 14th and the 23rd, during which the average total plays of the T50 was 22.93M, 0.74M lower than the month's average. The average total plays of the T200 during this time period was 44.62M, 1.71M lower than the month's average. The existence of this period explains the significant monthly increases of the ranges and standard deviations of the total plays values.
