In honor of my Best Of drawing to a close, I've put on an avatar of the guy behind my favorite single and album last year, Dierks Bentley.
This one will be the last for a bit.
6: Drake - Jungle
Jungle is the last appearance of If You're Reading This Its too Late on my song chart.
So much of the mixtape felt like world building, a tape designed to position Drake as the one with Control over everything; that introspective Heartbreak Drake that everyone had come to know was seemingly replaced by some egomaniacal vaguely paranoid frosty overlord of an empty kingdom. He had reached the top, but was lonely there seeking Company to take his mind off being in his prime.
Jungle though, is classic Drake down to his forward thinking sample. Take Care sampled Jamie XX , his breakthrough So Far Gone mixtape in 2009 samples Lykki Li and Santigold, and Jungle makes use of the gentle moonlit sway of Gabriel Garzón-Montano's 6 8 to give Drake a backdrop show some of his trademark vulnerability and heartbreak. He ponders the state of a relationship with a girl from the bad side of the Toronto tracks and finds that the girl in question has changed her number preventing him from that Hotline Bling. The relationship he really wanted was the one thing he couldn't have. The song also delivered the Drakeyiest line of the album with "Still findin' myself, let alone a soulmate, I'm just sayin'" It's relatable, it's vulnerable, it's arrogant, it's the 6 Man himself.
Your worst of list. The Sia description is accurate. Idk why she literally wants to sound annoying on record. I also agree about twenty one pilots' vocal hooks, especially on tracks like Heavydirtysoul, Ride, Polarize, Doubt, etc. They are lazy and show a lack of musicianship!
I haven't heard most of this, but your Wildheart description is accurate. Btw, nice vocab word with "carnal."
A touch surprised to see Miguel above Kendrick, but good album update! Especially happy to see Neon Indian so high up.
As for the songs I like your descriptions of them because most I haven't heard. Especially the Baroness song... Really wanna check that out. Jungle is good but I still need to check out that mixtape as a whole
Jungle is awesome as expected. If I ever get lost on an island and conveniently have my phone and wanted to play some music, I'd probably play that track first.
From what I've seen on your countdown, you might like Jazmine and Miguel both are solid R&B albums. Miguel's is more rock oriented and psychedelic, Jazmine's is more classically inspired.
I actually gave Miguel's album a listen last night/today, I really like it. I love how it's more rock oriented and psychedelic.
This is the first and only appearance of Baroness on my song list. I first got into this group with A Horse Called Golgotha sometime around the Blue album, but didn't really fully get into them until Yellow & Green which is one of my favorite albums and helped me through an almost impossibly rough patch in my life without getting into too much detail.
Purple, was released after the band was involved in a horrible accident after Yellow & Green and Chlorine & Wine was the first taste of the album. It's a very damaged song, seemingly taking place during the aftermath of the accident. It begins with a gorgeous dreamy intro, before waking up with a light drums, vaguely eerie electronics and some tentative guitar. When the singer, John Baizley comes to, he immediately calls to his nurse for help, and muses on the recovery process. Even though he's broken, and pained, as guitars and keyboards swirl and cascade around him, he finds himself resolute as the song ends with a resolute headbanging climax. It's an incredible song, and a very subtle one that proves that Baroness is more than just a metal band.
