It's simply not enough for Britney to continue releasing as she has done during the past few years, she's not going to stay on top without promotion. Her fans like to brag about "3" topping the charts, but the song barely reached the two million mark. That's not encouraging. She's yet to have a song cross the 3 million mark in paid downloads in the US. She needs to step it up to compete with the new girls that have emerged.

Agree with everything said. Britney can't keep not promoting her material, it's lazy & shows lack of commitment.

All we know is that they judge the song individually, the band's previous work has nothing to do with it, MAYBE you're right, but nothing suggests that, it's a pure assumption.

She is slowly fading and mostly due to her own carelessness; no promotion, no interviews, nothing to satisfy people's interest in her (not even her fans)
that doesnt mean she's becoming irrelevant (I don't think she'll ever be unless she just retires)
I mean, can you honestly say she's the same Britney from In The Zone?

She is a better Britney than In The Zone. The Circus era was the best since ...Baby One More Time radio wise. And she scored 2 more no.1's in the circus era, and 3 more top 10's. That isn't fading to me

I think that's the point people are trying to make, but it's being taken as Britney being unsuccessful. I have to agree with Celestial that both songs did very well, but were not global smashes.
This is just Britney growing older. She's not irrelevant, but she's not the same youthful gal from the late 90s/2000's era. That and people's music tastes have changed as well. I think she dominated during the hip-hop/urban era but it seems that the current fad is the dance/electro stuff.
Heh, it seems we have all forgotten the topic - has Lady Gaga surpassed the current stars? For now, yes. It remains to be seen what the future holds.

It was actually a fair statement to make. Britney is fading Globally. That does not mean she won't rise again, but her next album is going to be very important. It's been a long time since she had a global smash, her lack of promotion WW during the past few years has not helped her.

Womanizer was a Global smash, my Goddess, maybe you're confussing UK and World a bit?

It hasn't been done before and it's causing a huge impact. She is cool enough to be loved by those who seek to avoid commercialism and pop enough to be gulped up by the mainstream media. Expect to see many attempts at imitations but the first is never really topped.
She is well on her way to being a fully fledged legend and already at icon status whatever her critics want to say, she is recognised the world over and hasn't been around for long at all. Of course all other pressed stans are going to say it is delusion but her impact can't really be denied, that in itself would be delusional.
I have no doubt in my mind that 30 years down the line people will be listening to Bad Romance, Poker Face and whatever other hits she will throw our way in much the same way as we listen to Vogue, Livin' on a Prayer and Billie Jean. She is not the 'next' anyone, she is Lady Gaga and she is here to stay.

I dont think so. Especially since Lady Gaga is more known for her image and controversy than her own music. Her dress ups overshadows whats really important- Her music and talent (which she is talented btw). Her image is gimmicky, but it worked.

That's not fading. It's becoming secretive. When Britney releases a song you sing it, you dance it and you work it and that's not fading love. And the World accompanies you

And the singles did pretty damn good, she got a #1 in both 2008 and 2009 in the US, a worldwide #1 single with "Womanizer" and and a worldwide #1 album with "Circus", all that with almost no promo.

that's what happens when you have an amazing fanbase + digital downloading.
her material had no longevity whatsoever
Circus (the album) spent like 23 weeks on the chart and 3 spent an early 19-weeks run on the chart
and the only global smash was Womanizer, "In the Zone" era gave her 3 #1s worldwide, every single released went #1.
Honestly, the only aspect she topped in the zone with is tour grossings.

Gaga is a phenomenon and easily one of the biggest music debuts of all time. Yes Gaga can sell albums, singles, magazines, merchandise, and concert tickets. She can top every social network from Facebook to Twitter to YouTube. Her chart positions are excellent and she can even sweep award shows too. As the OP said, "Now, you have schools offering courses dedicated to GaGa." Things like this impress me so much and really show her impact. There's been dozens of artists with hit singles this year, but how many have a University course about them?! Pft. Or the fact that there's people out there that spend so much time and money recreating her outfits is insane and truly separates her from other artists. I'm so happy she can have these cultural achievements.
On top of all that, she's only 24. She has great management. She's arguably on the best record label. She's hardworking, focused, driven, and has so much potential to put out a lot more hits.

I bought CDs in the 90s because it was the only way to listen to music besides the radio. I didn't buy CDs because I was convinced to. You wouldn't believe how many terrible CDs I bought because of one song I liked on it.
Digital era is harder because everyone illegally downloads their music. It's hard for new artists to build a fan base when they can't sell their music or make more money for the label to promote them!

She's definitely surpassed the non-important stars such as Rihanna and Christina Aguilera.
