You need to adjust overscan and underscan, make sure the audio output is properly configured, etc. I do the same thing myself but don't talk as if Apple TV is useless when it's a popular product category. Like I said, most people aren't going to go through the hassle of it when they could have everything ready to go in a nice layout like in the Apple TV, and not everyone's laptop has HDMI.
