I just submitted a 200 word review of Lemonade to The Guardian, heres what I wrote
Quote:
Lemonade is equally compelling in its conviction as it is in its music and visuals. Every moment, every lyric feels necessary - distinctly lacking audio-visual filler often found on the albums and videos of her pop contemporaries. Each song is a distinct chapter in the dramatic arc of the album; moving through the stages of grief following the discovery of infidelity. There is some shared musical identify with Rihanna’s Anti. However, tuneful yet erratic Anti felt like a sketch whilst Lemonade feels like one purposeful brushstroke.
The album and film are emotionally raw and genuinely gripping, halfway through I felt as if I was going to wake up the next day to a divorce announcement. She rattles off war cries in the Jack White assisted ‘Don’t Hurt Yourself’, her delivery is unhinged and vitriolic, the track is electrifying, underpinned by a Led Zeppelin sample. Unusual territory for her musically but somehow feels natural. This is only the tip of the musical iceberg; with credits from Karen O, James Blake, Diplo and Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig.
Pulling these collaborators from the entire musical spectrum to create a body of work so rich and soulful and so Beyoncé, is the work of genius.
