Simon Cowell, Britney Spears, & Demi Lovato introduce you to
Quote:
Earlier today at the FOX TCA presentation in Los Angeles, President of Entertainment Kevin Reilly called new The X Factor judge Britney Spears "feisty" and pointing out that she's "not afraid to lay it on the line." For a woman who grew up in the music business, she has certainly seen (and done) just about everything. But having come through the Disney machine, does that make her more or less qualified to judge others on technical attributes with which she herself might not shine?
Well, that will remain to be seen when The X Factor premieres this fall. As will just how much she'll add to the "tune in television" factor of The X Factor because she was very reserved during today's TCA presentation.
"I think this show has been really good for me to do because being able to help the talent come in and achieve their dream, and I can relate to them on such a level-- I know the foundation and the depth of what they go through to achieve their dream," Spears sound-byted monotonously.
Though Simon Cowell claimed she could be mean and that she certainly knows what she likes, Spears didn't show any indication of sass or really energy at all today. Maybe she only turns it on for the cameras-- and maybe the closed circuit cameras of only a few hundred journalists weren't enough to get her excited to put on a show.
"I've done eight tours, and I've been in the music industry for awhile, and I really feel like being on a show where you can give back and help people achieve their dream is really interesting to me," she used the inappropriate affect.
However, Demi Lovato proved to be a spitfire in attitude, as well as chemistry with her fellow judges. And apparently it will only get better when the show actually airs because she will go head-to-head with Cowell the first episode.
The X Factor promos are asking us to "expect the unexpected" but unless Spears drops her baby voice (she's thirty now, gah!), we kind of know exactly what we're going to get, right?
Cowell will undoubtedly butt heads with one of the girls-- and if this panel (even via satellite) was any indication (and it should be), it will be Demi.
"Demi's a brat," he dead-panned. "But there's something really likeable about her as well. I think she'll bring in some of the younger audience, too, because I am in my late thirties now."
When asked why Cowell wanted Spears and Lovato on the show, he said that both bring different things and the show will show different sides to both of them. He admitted that everyone who sits on the panel is fair game for audience scrutiny, and their job security depends on how the audience responds to them and the dynamic they bring.
"They are harder to please than me or L.A.," Cowell said of Spears and Lovato. "They've definitely got their own opinions, but that's why we've hired them.
"The fact that Britney has been at the top of her game for as long as she has is a testament to her star power. And Demi, I've thought for the last couple of years, is one of the hottest stars at the moment, so I have to, unfortunately, agree with them from time to time."
Lovato, who is the youngest in age but also in years in this business, feels she contributes to the show because she is the right demographic for the show. She listens to the radio; she knows what her friends listen to on the radio; and she feels she knows what the industry is in need of right now.
L.A. Reid echoed her sentiment, noting that she is the closest judge to the landscape of pop music today, while Spears is the "pop princess" and has been for quite some time.
"Our two ladies here keep Simon and I on point," he said.
The judges panel isn't the only thing changing on The X Factor, though Cowell didn't have any major announcements to make about which fresh faces would be stepping into the hosting gigs. He did confirm that he wanted two hosts-- a male and a female-- and ideally, he is looking for those who have not previously been in the hosting position. Hmm, could it be another singer or pop star who just wants to take a lesser role?
"We are making some changes editorially and to the look of the show, not just against last year but also against the competition. There's a lot of competition this year," Cowell admitted. "The show will evolve a lot."
The X Factor will air a two night premiere starting on September 12th 2012 at 8 p.m. on FOX
