Yep. Gaga was presented as something more than an ordinary pop girl and that attracted a legion of people who considered themselves "above" ordinary pop music. I still remember all the monsters bragging about not being into pop music before Gaga.
But in the end she was just another manufactured product, her hits are as disposable as those of her peers (if not more so), and the "real" Gaga is not the woman they wanted her to be. Few things anger a person more than being made to look like an idiot.
