I think it's because Ariana has built quite the fan base after "The Way," so she has her hardcore stans/fans and more casual listeners being interested in her next single.
1D, on the other hand, still have their hardcore fans/stans, but casual listeners probably aren't too interested in their singles anymore. WMYB was their only huge hit here, and everything after that was just a complete flop or an underperformance.
They'll end up making that up in album sales, though.
