People always over-estimate their self control.
Hardly anybody starts taking drugs thinking they're going to get 'addicted'.
In many cases, they'll be going through a terrible patch in life, resort to drugs as a means of 'escape' with the intention of 'quitting' when things turn around. And that almost never happens.

The funny thing is that some of the people that get addicted the hardest are the people who say things like "I think it can be avoided, just choose a different fixation." They'll convince themselves that they have the strong will and know how to NOT get addicted, and delude themselves about their own addiction until it's too late.

I'm not judging drug addicts because I know some personally and it's not something you can shake off overnight and isn't just something you do just because - there's a reason for it. But it's not cancer nor is it something hereditary. It's indeed careless - sad but still careless nonetheless, and any former drug addict would describe it as such.

Exactly. People overestimate their willpower. I don't know whose fault that is as the dangers of drugs are well publicised. Sadly, everybody turns to drugs for different reasons and I don't think there's a blanket welfare solution to the problem at all.

but you're forgetting that humans have emotional pain. thats what may lead a brain to crave alcohol/narcotics etc

It attacks as indiscriminately as cancer tho. Doesn't matter if you're old, young, black, white, gay, straight, rich, poor, middle-class, trans, cis, etc.

It's fun to sit around with a non-drug-addicted mind and act like it's so easily avoidable, but if it was that easy we wouldn't see so damn much of it from people who should "know better."
