It's sad but in the end it's self inflicted. Just like when you get HIV after unprotected sex. One stupid act ruins your whole life. No need to be so judgmental and uncompassionate though, it's not like he deserved this end or didn't try to fight it.

The man had been sober for like over 20 years before relapsing last year. Heartbreaking, to be honest.

Who's defending drug addicts? If anything, I'm defending the understanding of how devastating the disease of a drug addiction can be.
And drugs are avoidable but that doesn't mean you shouldn't display some form of tact when speaking of a deceased person's addiction (unless that person happens to be Chris Brown or something).

Pointing out that drug addicts make terrible decisions makes some people feel smart/better about themselves for some reason.

Is this directed at me? Because I've never even insinuated otherwise.
And people tend to show tact once someone dies from this "disease." When Whitney was alive - for example - not a soul used "tact". She was the butt of all drug jokes. You can't have it both ways.
I think its because he's a man. Women change their priorities and mind frame when they have children.
Women can be addicts too. Addiction is an awful thing- it must feel terrible to hurt the ones u love over a drug... and I'm sure that guilt prob. drives addicts to binge even further.

Pretty much, as the legend in my avi said " it's stupid and senseless"

At disease being in quotation marks. Phagg, bew. And am not getting what the Whitney bit has to do with my post.
It can't always be avoided. The other day I watched a documentary about Belgian singer Kim Kay who ended up with a morphine addiction after her cervical cancer. It was so sad, it destroyed her life. Everyone (including husband and son) abandoned her cause they didn't trust her anymore, she was always craving it above all else.

It was something I wanted to throw in there. Tact should always be used when dealing with this "disease" (and yes, I put in it "quotation marks" because it's indeed arguable), not just when someone dies from it.
I think it can be avoided. Yes, some experts say that just like mental illness some brains are more predisposed to addiction..I say one can always choose a fixation that isn't a narcotic. Why not have a sex addiction or a caffeine addiction? Something harmless.
