Nickelback lasted a lot longer than many expected. To think they were the most hated band, yet in the same year managed to release an album that sold over 8 million units in the US. Like, who was buying?
I think Maroon 5 would have been fine, they really established themselves with their 1st two albums. Hands All Over was underperforming but they could have easily made a comeback.
It was looking really bad at the beginning of the HAO era. The Voice saved their careers.

Don't get it twisted, The Voice boosted Adam's popularity, the other band members faded into oblivion, they aren't Fall Out Boy or Paramore, real bands whose members beyond the lead singer have a following on social media
People always come for 2010's for having bad and lazy Pop Stars that are big with no talent, yetttt even during music's peak they had Nickelback, Baha Men, and Sisqo go multi-platinum so yeah, music has always had embarrassing fads.
Not a 41 on Metacritic and an 8x Platinum certification. I know there isn't always a correlation between sales and critical acclaim, but that is so weird to me.

The late 90s/early 00s was the absolute worst time for music. So many manufactured acts, so many gimmicks, so many marketing tie-ins. And grandiose worshiping of the 80s stars was out of control.
Where and when did the universal hate for Nickelback begin?
They have always been critic poison, but I think all of the hate happened when "How You Remind Me" took over airwaves. Didn't they use to get shoes and bottles thrown at them at their shows?
My sister and dad LOVED Nickleback. No clue if they still do. My best friend from elementary to middle school was also obsessed with them and would play them all the damn time.
