I am absolutely crushed this morning. This morning, the baseball community woke up to the news that All-Star Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez died in a boating accident overnight. Fernandez, 24, had the third-most strikeouts ever for his amount of innings pitched, and was widely regarded as someone who would only continue to improve. He was as passionate for the game as anybody, always smiling and happy to be playing. He brought local kids to Sunday home games and helped to ensure that his family could defect from Cuba like he did so they could be reunited in Miami. We have lost an amazing pitcher and an even better person. RIP.
This is so sad. When he pitched against the Cardinals earlier in the year, I remember he gave up a crushed homerun and all he could do is smile cause he knew it was long gone. Lol just a fun guy.
In Vin Scully's final game ever, Dodgers player Charlie Culberson hits a walk-off tater in the 10th inning against his old club to win the NL West and to send Scully out with a good note. The Giants also lost.
ug i have cried too much, he jus means so much for da organizaton and da city
got those unaware of his story
he tried escaping Cuba three times, even jailed for his third escape, on his fourth attempt, he was successful
during dat escape, he had heard someone go overboard, and da people were like u can't save them, he was like I have to, without knowing who dat person was, it would come out dat it was his mom who he saved
all at da age of 15
Jose would go on and settle i Tampa and would be drafted by The Marlins in 2011 and would go on to his rookie year in 2013, beating his friend and fellow Cuban exile, Yasiel Puig, for rookie of da year
right before he had won da award, The Marlisn organization was able to get his grandmother to get her visa and to come see her grandson, the woman who taught him da love for baseball, a woman who would have to climb to da roof of her home to get da Spanish broadcast of The Marlins to hear him pitch
my heart goes out to his mom and Abuela, and to his girlfriend who is pregnant with their first child
Seeing Big Papi and Yasiel jus lose it tpoday broke my heart
Fellow Cuban Yoenis Cespedes beautiful tribute to his fallen friend left me in shambles
huge hit for the organization, we've been very fortunate to have 2 championships but da magic dat was created by Jose & Giancarlo, two up and coming stars dat we created, we didn't get them thriugh trade, its gonna be a while before we may ever see another phenom like him
The procession started at Marlins Stadium, went to Our Lady of Charity church in Coconut Grove to get a blessing and is now off to the official church, St. Brenden's, for his wake and viewing
