Discussion: Why do rock fans get so angry when you don't know their fave

I don't know if it's just rock fans that do it. I think fans of any genre would not be too happy about someone not knowing the greats of their favorite genre.
I can understand somebody not knowing an artist, like the OP said, we all come from different backgrounds and have different levels of exposure to certain genres, but since we are on the Internet while on here it's not too hard to do a quick Google search or look up a song on Spotify or whatever to quickly familiarize yourself with an artist and expand your boundaries a little.

I'd think a little background should exist tbh. We're talking about the some of the biggest, most successful, most acclaimed and influential bands of all time for Christ's sake.

But as some people mentioned, some people may know Radiohead but not the individual members such as Tom. I can't name all the individual Beatles members expect from two either.

The person in the Pink Floyd thread asking if "Pink has a band".
Reminds me of the lyrics from Have a cigar
" By the way which one's Pink?"

People who are 2000 babies might not listen to 90s music because they weren't alive to appreciate the artists or it sounds incredibly dated to them. It's not that serious. I don't listen to much 80s music either (I'm a 90s baby)only MJ and I bop to Like A Prayer but I don't even think that was released in the 80s

Good music is timeless and to purposely refuse to listen to and dismiss music that was released before specific time is not a preference, its ignorance.

MTE It's all subjective.
Research ft Ariana grande is the best song in the world but I'm sure none of you rock fans know that excellent song either.

John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Ringo Starr.
But seriously, that I understand. I personally wouldn't care if someone told me they didn't know who Thom is, as he is more niche than the band itself.
In that particular case, I believe what Brando said was that Sam is a musician while not even knowing who Thom is, and that is indeed a bit side-eye worthy, imo.
But I don't care about Sam, so whatever!

Thom Yorke's name is not recognizable by 99% of the GP. Radiohead were never humongous and most people would only recognize the band's name.
Pink Floyd, on the other hand, are still outselling most of ATRL's faves and have one of the biggest careers ever. They deserve to be forgotten, though. They are uninspired and so lame when put up against other bands of their time.

I grew up in the hood, I am black and R&B/Rap is our ****.
I still know rock bands THOUGH.
I don't agree with calling them ignorant, but, I've seen pop fans do the same thing; yet no one cares.
In Sam Smith's case, he's a 20-something BRIT, and from what I understand Radiohead is big over there and he is a musician; so not being familiar with the name Thom Yorke is strange to me.
It's like if for instance Ariana Grande wasn't familiar with any popular American pop/R&B act of the 90s.

Pink Floyd is anything but the things you just described.
But according to you, who were the inspired and great bands of their time?

R&B/Hip-Hop is the most popular. If I were to try and play some Rock music around my people they would tell me to cut that **** off

This, I pretty much only know my rock groups from Beyonce and Rihanna
(And then there's AC DC but that's another story)

Yes, he is. Wicked even mentioned something very important that I low key forgot (that he's British).
Omg, this has just became all the more tragic now that I think about it.
