Basically.
The others have had creative freedom because they've slightly influenced the sound of the band on each song they've worked on, under the umbrella of pop/rock. For example, I believe Harry changed the demo of Drag Me Down from a generic, Take Me Home sound to the guitar riffs and The Police inspired track we have today.
If Zayn would have taken the demo and turned it into a Frank Ocean song, it's obvious it would be rejected. That's like Gaga making a country album or Katy starting making gangsta rap. Of course it would be rejected and not make sense.
