Soundscan didn't exist when Thriller and Bad were at their strongest, so it's impossible to make that comparison. Bad could have sold one million or more copies in the US it's first week, and more than 3 million worldwide as global as MJ was. Thriller could easily done the same when Billy Jean and Beat It hit #1 with only one week of separation, and other weeks as well. But both were released in the 1980s, and Soundscan tracking didn't begin until 1991.
