Christmas is the FEAST day of the nativity of Jesus. Feast days don't necessarily follow the actual date of the event being commemorated. It's the religious authorities who picked the specific date for any feast day.

Aslo, as long as the spirit of giving is alive Christmas will never lose its religious significance because that's basically what it is about. And there are no specific rules for Christians to observe Christmas (hence the pagan traditions being carried over into Christmas celebration and one can choose to follow or not to follow those traditions) since it is not the most important Christian festival. That would have to be Easter.

Not really. A better example would be Holy Week or Lent two Christian events like Ramadan.

In case you did not know. Christmas as a celebration is very recent. Before it used to be banned in many countries like the US. Christmas is a comercial holiday, the celebration of advant is not.

v original thread. I've definitely never seen this discussion (like once or twice every christmas). It's a cultural holiday, far removed from whatever religious roots it had. Snow, Christmas trees, Santa Claus, and most of all presents. None of this conjures strictly religious imagery in anyone's mind anymore

Can they? Yeah they can. Should they? No because it would be rather contradictory. Even if Christmas as we know it today is hardly a religious ceremony, it still has its roots in Christianity and the birth of Jesus Christ, after all Christmas is THE reason for the season!

Duh. People turned the day of celebration regarding Christ's ascension (Easter) into a day where you hide some ****ing eggs around your house and pretend a giant rabbit left everybody gift baskets.

If everyone can do that even though it has nothing to do with the tradition itself, then you shouldn't have a problem.

Technically speaking, no. However, Christmas is now a holiday separate from its original meaning. If atheists didn't celebrate Xmas then all the retailers would probably go bust as that's their main money maker.

I'm atheist and I celebrate Christmas. I celebrate It purely because it's lovely to have the entire family together for a meal and enjoy each others company, no harm in that IMO.
