It has been widely argued that artists like JT and Miley have benefited from using black-influenced music/images and have been more successful than if they were black. The Superbowl incident (where Janet got all of the blame) was evidence of that and his career moves ever since have been further proof.
I think that people are more inclined to listen to music by people who look like them. Because whites are the overwhelming majority, and those that heavily purchase music, they determine who is successful. That is why you have artists like Nicki Minaj, Ne-yo, Usher, RIh and several others who are experimenting with POP sounds.
The biggest example of this is the rise of Adele. There are many black women that can sing circles around Adele, but because we are more inclined to listen to music by people who look like us, many white people are unfamiliar with Jill Scott, Angie Stone, Jazmine Sullivan, and Keyshia Cole (all who can blow)....Similar to Justin Timberlake vs. Miguel.
How ezy is it to to put a non-black girl in fashion, movies, business, campaigns, mag covers etc?.....The fact Rihanna is the first black human to ever do a Dior campaign says a lot on the topic. How many black singer got a Sept cover?...Not many TBQH. That's why there are not many avg black singers because they don't get the chance to last long as a light skin does.
