No, but you are allowed to use a hard g or a soft g for any word.

People only get angry about this because they refuse to admit they use broken English.
It's like when people refuse to stop using "fishes" to talk about more than one fish because it's "sounds better" when really it's because no one corrected them when they called them "fishes" when they were three.
