How can you ask such a question when Applause is without any doubt one of Gagas most commercial sounding tracks (if not the most) while FFS is something Rihanna NEVER did before.
2. Gaga performed Applause on every event possible and even opened the VMA's with the song. Rihanna performed FFS ONCE.
3. FFS didn't even had a lyric video while Gaga made an event out of her lyric video
4. The "POP SUPERSTAR EMERGENY!!!!!" meltdown and early release
But I'm sleep

Let me wake you up.
1) In Gaga's pot filled mind at the time of ARTPOP's writing, even Jewels and Drugs was supposed to be a hit. The production while not being very weird was definitely NOT what was hot on the radio in 2013. Not to mention one song says "45Seconds from running(?)" and the other is "One second I'm a Koons then suddenly the Koons is me".
2) The thread is about the BB H100. That means US performances aka VMAs, a morning show GMA, and iTunes festival oh and The Muppets where the special tanked in ratings. So, hardly everywhere.
3) Seriously? The drag queen based video filmed at a bar is the reason that Applause was charting months later? Really?
4) Ummm, if anything that actually made the song perform WORSE than it did.
It's simple really, Applause was what more people wanted to hear.
