I've always thought the song is pretty meh, but BTW deserves credit for being explicit. All the other "empowerment anthems" that pop girls intimated were "for my gay fans" are so transparent. For your gays fans, sure, but you can't say so in the song because it would offend more conservative listeners (especially parents). The fact that Kidz Bop totally censored BTW speaks volumes tbh

Yup. Born This Way and Same Love were way more effective because of how explicitly supportive they were. They took the risk and now they're rightfully being celebrated and remembered for it. It would be wrong for Pitchfork to single out WRWWR, Firework, FP etc. over BTW/SL and people know that.

She's basically branded the phrase, which is a sign of successful impact. Firework is referenced too but as a general self-empowerment, whist Born This Way is nearly always in the context of LGBT/being different.

The closest you're going to come is targeting outcasts ("Raise Your Glass"), but that's not specific enough to be directed at LGBT. The general ones like "****in' Perfect", "Firework" and "We R Who We R" were generic and could be directed at any audience.

So how many of them did it before and after?

She sang the song whilst accepting one of her 8 awards and that was during VMAs 2010 where she stole the show (again) without being part of the list of performers
