Azealia Banks, Kid Cudi & Drake are the main ones to do surprise release since Bey. Yes, she popularized it. And since, Madonna, Björk and Angel Haze have done similar things, and Rihanna and Nicki Minaj were constantly saying how their albums are "just gonna drop out of nowhere."

Call me when Katy Perry, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift or Britney Spears make a surprise release... I would even take Kesha, Selena Gomez, Miley Cyrus, Ariana Grande, Iggy Azalea or Nicki Minaj.

Why does it have to be a female Pop singer to count? Leave it to ATRL to think that female pop stars are the only ones who matter in the music industry.
Lets not forget that Azealia Banks, Angel Haze, and Kid Cudi all surprise released after Beyoncé. There are other artists in the world outside of the Top 40 bubble.

Rihanna and Taylor Swift both announed it first, Madonna's case was different because her album had already leaked. Drake? So Beyoncé started the trend of every surprise release? So if Apple surprise releases the new iPhone tomorrow, are you going to say they pulled a Beyoncé? Or a surprise birthday party? MANY things were surprise released before her album, mixtape =|= album. I don't know who U2 is so I can't talk about them.

Call me when their labels, who have the final say of what any of them put out, deem them promising enough to take the risk of a surprise release.

Yeah, she may not have been the first one but she's the one who started the trend.

Ok so she started a trend for other non pop girls artists? I can give you that, just don't come here implying my faves are following a trend Beyoncé "started".

I'm sure Katy's Birthday video was her idea, Miley's Wrecking Ball, Rihanna's 45S, Lady Gaga's Artpop era... Those examples are way riskier than Beyoncé's surprise release

Yes, her release was a literal surprise, people had no idea she's going to release an album. And stop bringing names like Radiohead, Kanye etc. Those were not surprise releases.

some of ya'll are so willfully blind it would be maddening if I cared
the tactic? no she didn't create the surprise release
the trend? most definitely; how would 'pulled a Beyoncé' have permeated into music journalism language if that wasn't the case?
to answer the delusional Navy stan on the first page, the list you so desperately squawk for includes: Kid Cudi, Wolfmother, Angel Haze, Skrillex, Azealia Banks, Drake, Bjork, D'Angelo, Colbie Caillat, Chance the Rapper (plans to do it), U2 and Radiohead
Any questions?

Like over half of these weren't surprise really. Plus, Chance the Rapper (plans to do it), if you know he's planning how is that a surprise?

Let's put it this way. Elvis didn't event Rock n Roll but is considered it's King. Beyonce wasn't first to do the surprise release but from now on it would be reffered to as "pulling a BEYONCE" simply because she made it mainstream. Not to mention her celebrity is twice the size of those who did it before her.
