I REALLY was not trying to turn this into a Rihanna bash thread - but this has valid points. The moment I saw this picture in the "#R8 Thread" last month, the first thing I thought was that she was going to borrow "FKA Twigs" look. Many on the first page agreed with me as well.



The reason she gets away with it is because like the Navy has pointed out to me, she borrows from artists that has a large cult or indy following, but them, themselves, do not have a strong mainstream presence. However, many people are still familiar with their looks.

Rita? When did she copy Rita?
When did she copy Kelis?
She already mentioned how Fefe was an inspiration for her so she didn't copy her
What's more Vogue, and the council of American designers which unanimously declared Rihanna as an innovator are more important than a pressed hater's opinion on a pop forum

Bottomline: Rihanna has been doing 90s looks for a while, I'm not surprised that a lot of the people claiming she's ripping FKA twigs are from one particular fan base though

Exactly. The girls she borrow from aren't big enough mainstream for people to really go "wait, this look familiar" so she gets away with it. And the her fans acts like she popularizes/created the look and therefore anyone to do it after or in Rita's case before, is accused of stealing the look from Rihanna. If this were the other way around, it would be FKA was inspired by Rihanna, not Janet, and we all know it.

The fact that some people accurately predicted this before it happened is telling of how her and her team work. She'll jump on an already blossoming trend and they'll try to credit her for it. See the ghetto goth trend and it's originators, who called her out for it.

Red hair was a 1990s trend? Are the braids Bey wore in Say Yes like FKA's at all?

And whether or not FKA is popular enough or not says nothing about whether or not Rihanna was inspired by her. If Rihanna takes this look on, most likely she will be attributed to it, but FKA is also not some nobody. She's been on BIG magazines. This isn't a Fefe Dobson situation. She's really respected and has a good following.
