Um, no they're not. The doctors who labeled homosexuality a mental illness are pretty much all dead or out of practice now.

I'm in debt 12k dollars and have no credit because of that surgery. There are real issues in this country and you need to learn them. You're so backwards and delusional it actually hurts to see someone this dumb posting

What was the name of the surgery, why wasn't it covered, and why does that mean other people should have to suffer?
Launching into a rant of swear words makes it seem more likely that you're lying, just FYI.

But for the record, how is it productive to take the "if I'm going down, everyone's going down with me" mentality. Incredibly selfish. There's really no need to trivialize mental health and illnesses; transgender individuals experience awful discrimination and are at risk for various life-threatening issues. Self-harm is not uncommon unfortunately.

I'm not poor enough for medicaid and not rich enough to have any type of insurance that helps. The insurance company kicked the bill back to me because they'd rather me first have a heart attack. That's why the US needs to do like Canada and make healthcare free

So who's spreading bullet? You can't change your beliefs just because someone else disagrees.

So instead of lobbying for your insurance to be better, you want Medicaid to not cover a procedure that can be life saving for many people?
How, exactly, does denying someone a sex change make your heart condition any better, or make your insurance any better?,

Aww, boo-hoo for not being poor
and mess, you see this predicament you're in, this is exactly what trans people feel. Except no matter how poor or rich they were before, no insurance would cover a surgery like this. This is a huge step towards trans equality

ddd I was waiting for this one. The difference is that "treatments" for homosexuality weren't treatments. They were pathologized for a normal aspect of human individual differences (sexual orientation). People were being FORCED to undergo "treatments" that did nothing but create more mental health issues.
Transgender individuals need to decide that they want surgery, no ones forcing them. Moreover, they report increases in quality of life (sorta) and are actually benefiting from the treatment. The topics are not parallel.

That doesn't mean you know.more about medicine than them. In fact, you objectively know less than them.
The only example you've offered so far of doctors not being correct is for a point that has been refuted and reversed by modern science. Modern doctors recognize that homosexuality is not a mental illness. So you're actually proving my point that modern doctors know better, and you still have yet to offer any compelling reason with scientific or medical backing as to why this surgery should not be covered by insurance. What knowledge do you have that medical professionals and health insurance companies do not?

No I'm human and angry. Congratulations on what you think professor.
And for anyone that's wondering (not this asshole ^) I had a few done. cardiac catheterization and cardiac ablation were the last two that put me in the hole and they weren't covered because the insurance thought I wasn't sick enough even though doctors said I was and I could barely breathe. This is why insurance is bad! I'm all for sex change being covered as long as the government covers everyone's medical expenses

While I agree with you and I'm sorry that you're stuck in that situation, my previous points stand. I don't wanna come off holier than thou but we all need to practice humanitarian values. Attacking a group in need just because your need isn't met is awful. This is why hate and ignorance will always spread. We should fight for better systems to protect all of us, not tear down the people above/adjacent to us

Kind of a slippery slope you're riding on. Especially since to get this type of surgery, transgenders need to demonstrate a need for SRS. And like someone mention, gender dysphoria is a listed mental health issue that can lead to serious complications such as suicide if not treated.
It's a far cry from the days when "homosexuality is a mental illness" where it was more out of homophobia propaganda than it was out of medical opinion.

I'm sorry to hear that. I shouldn't have been so condescending, I get worked up about these issues. Its very off.putting to hear someone say "well they don't deserve treatment because MY insurance didn't cover me." Someone could just as easily say to you "Well you don't deserve your insurance to cover that because I don't have insurance!" Taking it out on other sick people isn't the answer.

oh really? trans people feel like they're physically dying because they're heart doesn't work right? oh. I don't feel comfortable paying for someone's sex change operation when a lot more people die everyday from much worse conditions that my money could be going towards treating.

Gender dysphoris is a MENTAL Illness and you can't cure a mental illness through physical surgery. It's like saying if someone feels depressed because they don't have the perfect body and get plastic surgery, they will be cured, right? No. It's a chemical imbalance and a physical change can't fix something that's chemical. The same could be said about gender dysphoria.

One of the known complications of untreated gender identity disorder is suicide.
For someone who has suffered life threatening condition, you lack empathy. That's sad. Don't turn health into a competition.
Doctors reccomend these sex change operations just like you were reccomended yours.

Where does it end?
Should they stop treating diabetes because cancer is a much bigger concern? Maybe they'll then decide to quit treating cancer because heart disease is an even bigger concern?
I just

I truly feel for the people who have insecurities, or who feel like the body or gender they were given at birth isn't adequate enough for them. I honestly just feel that medicaid should be used for actual circumstances where the patient requires medical attention. Having a sex change is voluntary. I'd prefer my tax dollars go to something that could possibly save someones life, or treat them of illness. If this ever happens it's going to open up a huge pandora's box of issues, and complications. If you're going to allow voluntary sex changes, then you need to cover almost everything that is voluntary, or cosmetic..
