The indie image excuse is bullsh*t aswell, she had every major indie publication kissing her ass when the album dropped and all of them labeled Night Time, My Time one of the best albums in 2013. The public don't even know who Sky is so no one was "seeing through her"

Capitol didn't send the singles to radio and she wasn't booked to visit any radio stations, that's what it'll always boil down to when you're signed to a major. All of Azealia's singles post 212 have bombed aswell, atleast she had Radio 1 and Hot 97 premiering her singles, Sky didn't have any of that.

An Ariel Rechtshaid written&produced album... will not get critical praise? Even her best received song had to be written by others (Dev) and no actual award noms.

An Ariel Rechtshaid written&produced album, & Dev Hynes songs... will not get critical praise?

She did Letterman, Kimmel, Fallon and an appearance on a Brazilian chat show. No other television performances. Each performance was about 3 months apart but if that's what you consider "a lot of promo" then ok

Oh and by the way, Dev didn't produce anything NTMT and Ariel didn't contribute anything to the lyrics, Sky did them all herself. Not just "critical praise", one of the best albums of the decade according to Pitchfork but anyway, back to Azealia.

Whether it's a distribution deal, or a full-out deal, I'm so happy for her. She's literally one of the best out there period, and she not only deserves to be heard / successful, but at least a proper launch for her album is amazing. and this is exactly what I meant by the public sees right through her, despite being an indie pet, she comes off as a major label indie cliche to the point actual indie artists have called her out on it. The public doesn't connect with her like they did with Lana, Lorde, etc.
