The Dream Says Song Leaks Actually Help Him, Explains Concept Behind Infectious Ballad, "Fancy"
By Nile Ivey, BET.com Staff
On the eve of his sophomore release, Love Vs. Money, Mr. Nash isn't troubled by the fact that in addition to several tracks from the set ("Sweat It Out" & "Walking On The Moon" ft. Kanye West) hit the net prematurely, the project also sprung a leak in it's entirety just last Friday (March 6).
The Dream discusses "Fancy" and why music leaks help instead of hurt him. In fact, The Dream's exudes such a concrete confidence in his core demographic that he believes situations like these can only assist in his awareness and not slice away at it. The singer explained to BET.com backstage at 106 & Park on Monday afternoon, "What I think about leaking records is, I don’t like the fact that my demos get leaked, but if it’s a record that I finished or even if you download it, it’s fine with me."
The Dream's theory is simple; if they love the material that much, it won't stop them from paying for it either online or in the stores. He added, "I think the people that support me understand without a certain amount of sales; I can’t come back from that, no matter how good I am. If you download my record and you don’t buy my record you’re risking the fact that I may never make a record with Kanye West or Mariah Carey again."
And since he believes the consumer is aware of the dynamics of these types of issues, as said before, his confidence overrides any doubt that the material won't be purchased the legal way once it's available. As for now, The Dream only believes the early arrival of his material can only help and not hurt him.
Says the singer, "By them knowing that, they’ll just download it to have it quick and fast, but I do think they’ll go to the stores or buy the material off of iTunes. So in this case, leaks actually help me out."
As for the actual album itself, Love Vs. Money which hoists the concept of deciding whether love or money determines ones happiness, possess an infectious ballad, "Fancy", that provides a manuscript for individuals, specifically females, that anything is possible.
The Dream said of the he piano driven tune, which will have a visual directed by Mary J. Blige [Watch The Dream explain the creation of "Fancy" here], "I wanted to do something different. They’re always trying to put us, as an urban kid, in a certain of box, so I just wanted to do a piano driven and a lyric driven record and that’s what “Fancy” is. It’s about a girl that can go from working at McDonalds or a certain place, but as long as you have a certain mind frame to want something better out of life, that’s what can end up happening because that’s what happened to me."
The Dream's, Love Vs Money, hits stores March 10 via Radio Killa Records/ Def Jam Records.
