The big singles have been massive, but the 'flops' have been pretty underwhelming.

She got TWO career-defining hits this era, so absolutely not.

He's incomparable and its silly to think people are taking the comparison so seriously.

You are taking it way too seriously.

nnn so you're saying that MJ didn't have an impact on you but Katy did so she's worthy of the title. Everybody knows that MJ has such a powerful impact on music as a whole and on different artists that came after him, no one can deny it and if his impact doesn't matter to you then why is ATRL fighting over the female MJ title.
I am not one of MJ's biggest fans but no one can reach his level of impact or success and many have tried it but fell short at the end.
|
Why are you guys taking these titles so seriously. I mean people have called Usher,Neyo, Justin and Bruno the new MJ and we all know all of them combined cant touch him.
Relax...it's not to be taken so seriously.

they are easily bigger than most of Katy's previous singles
plus when was the last time an urban song made so much WW impact?
I'm talking about Dark Horse obvi

Her urban reach alone shows this isn't an underperformer

It knocked the wind out of Unconditionally and Birthday's sail.

Teenage Dream (like Thriller, Bad, and 21) are one in a lifetime albums. The fact only two albums in history have ever produced five number 1 songs in the US should have been a pretty good indicator that Katy was never going to replicate Teenage Dream's success. I remember watching an interview where Katy said she knew she wouldnt be able to repeat Teenage Dream, and that has been reflected in her artistic choices this era e.g. choosing Unconditionally as a single over Dark Horse.
Anyway, like I said before, Prism is NOT underperforming single wise. It's going pretty great so far tbh. Most artists would LOVE to have not one, but two huge smashes, and then to have other hit singles from the album is a bonus too.

omg I can't believe you literally think that
She is slowing down, I don't think she will continue to be successful like Rihanna for example.

Of course not, don't be ridiculous.

Because if people were buying her album then they wouldn't have been buying the singles, meaning she wouldn't have gotten 5 number 1s. Duh. When have sales ever been directly correlated to the amount of number 1s an album has?

This.
But I can't at people even comparing teenage dream to Prism. Again, teenage dream came out when the hot 100 was sales based only.
The music climate is totally different today. In music as a whole, Katy has only increased her trajectory. She's selling more. She's performing in bigger venues. Her tickets are more expensive, Anyone that can honestly say that Katy is underperforming needs to re-evaluate their opinions.
Katy is going to achieve longevity - I'm sorry to dissapoint her haters but it's going to happen.

ALL of your faves would count their lucky stars if they had two smashes as big as Roar and DH from one album.

well, two huge hits, decent album's sales...
vs.
two flops, overexposure, bad reviewed album, bad performances, "no impact" on culture...
in terms of sales it's doing good, in all other terms (quality, peformances, cultural impact...) it's underperforming, but it's not like anyone in their right mind would expect from katy anything more than releasing hit singles.

Two smashes is great but I thought her other singles would have done better, especially Unconditionally considering it's a beautiful song.

Half of those copies were sold in the US, where the singles had their biggest success, and another million was sold in the UK, where 7/8 went top 10.

Prism is doing fine, let's just wait for TIHWD and WOA
