The vid that you linked here was posted by "missjanetmixes," and that "thing" is an amazing YouTube resource. It seems to have every remix and instrumental of hers ever released on CD, so if there is an instrumental of "This Time" out there, missjanetmixes would have it. It does not.

some genres of music started going bad by around 2001, but generally i think music is starting to get a little better now, but i still prefer 90's music.... classics. I agree with P!nk when she said that the intellectual side of rap music needs to make a rebound..... i don't know how many more "booty" songs i can stand.

I honestly don't mind the music of today. There have been some songs that are going to be classics 10 years from now like "Umbrella" . We will be older and be like "Holy ****! I remember dancing at the club to this song!" Sure some songs of today are kinda crappy, but hey, if it has a good beat and catchy lyrics, why not put it into my iPod. I constantly go back to the 90s and check out songs and albums that I never really heard, but now I'm in love with (I'm going through a Red Hot Chili Peppers phase now). I can't wait for music to constantly evolve and see where my favorite artists now (like Beyonce, John Mayer or Vanessa Carlton) will grow and use their life experiences and what not to express what's going on now. Change is a good thing.
P.S. I'm so glad I found this site and see people who care about music as much as I do.

her album was supposed to be out this year but was pushed back because of her divorce (among other reasons probably).... her husband was her long time producer, so she may not be working with him on her new album, but as of now it's still due in 2009.... hopefully! the last one came out in 2002

I like both, 90s in generally I think pop/hip-hop/rock had more substance and variety, however. Everything changed a lot around circa 1998 when hip-hop became more party oriented and the rise of teen pop, and by about 2002/3 the transition was complete. '90s rock was all about grunge and alternative music, this stuff evolved from the likes of Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, STP, Alice In Chains to stuff more poppy stuff like Matchbox Twenty, Nickelback, Creed, etc. Soulja Boy is just a gimmick. R&B in the '90s was more soulful slow jam type stuff, in the 2000s it's more infused with hip-hop and pop. Rap in the '90s was more about life on the streets, in the 2000s it's about partying. Things are just different. I thought 2006 and 07 were pretty mediocre in general but I like 2008 better.

Yes it's changed for the worse. I'm not trying to sound like one of those people who are stuck in the past and constantly mentioning how everything was better in their golden days, because I do love today's music, but in all honesty I think the main problem with today's mainstream music is the lack of originality.
There used to be a time when playing an instrument was cool, now everyone just goes shopping for beats like they're at Wal-Mart and it reflects on a bunch of songs sounding exactly the same:
Blindfold Me = Whatever U Like
Tattoo = Irreplaceable = Go On Girl = One Word = With You
Good Things = Can't Leave em Alone
Snap Yo Fingers = Cyclone
and the list goes on!, not to mention Timbaland's plagiarism accusations. Being creative is not enough, originality is a must! I bet most mainstream artists of today don't even know how to read, play or articulate music, they just go pulling out obscure songs, stealing the beats and changing them enough to not be accused of plagiarism. That was hardly the case in the 90s when most stuff that came out sounded fresh, creative, original AND talented. And the list of artists dussymob posted is the perfect example of what I'm talking about :

PREACH.!! Originality is what the people of today are lackin. People say that Beyonce stills ideas and things that's been done before..NO she recreates things from the old days and add a new flavor to them. That's what I love about her. She doesn't do what's hot right now..she does what was hot back then because back then it actually meant somethin. So rnbsuperstar read these posts and learn from it instead of tryna put people on blast but got blasted.

IKR! Although, I'm more partial to the Up! era stuff like "Ka-ching" and "Forever and for Always" being that 90's radio ingrained her three crossover hits into my mind for the rest of time.

travis, shut the **** up. My first amendment states that I have the freedom of speech therefore I will say whatever I feel like saying *****. If I wanna put your name in MY topic, then I will. I wasn't DISRESPECTING you in anyway. And I didn't take what you said and switched it around. I used your exact quotes from our conversation. You WERE praising Beyonce and thats all you were doing. This thread isn't even ABOUT beyonce, its about the industry and how its either changing or downfalling. Grow up and act mature. You can either act your age or your shoe size (but im sure you only know how to act your shoe size).

what the **** are you talking about? I put NO ONE on blast. You are putting yourself on blast by being so childish and immature. Grow up lil boy because this is a mature conversation and if you're going to act like a 2 years old then I suggest you go in a forum where they talk about barbies.
******** about Beyonce recreating music from the old days. But this thread isn't about Beyonce (like i said)
