This guy obviously took it too far but Asian countries do take education more seriously on average than western countries. You just have to look at world rankings for that and see how far more competitive their students are on average. Whether we like it or not, we should be thriving to be doing as well while maintining a healthy life style for our youth instead of dumbing down everyone except a small minority.
From my experience, education is extremly important for asian people. One of my asian friends was not allowed to come home( FOR DAYS!) when she got B+ on a subject.
I am a straight A student myself and my parents are the opposite, very laidback. I was just born with a thirst for learning. I like challanges.

I'm the one who lived in both kinds of society, I understand why that happened.
The Asian society overall has high respect for people who has high degrees, even though many of them are just good at reading books and can't do anything in real life. Meanwhile the western society cares more about the ones who can get **** done, so education doesn't matter. Education is a tool to get to success, while in asian society, education is success.
That's very unlucky for the girl and her family, but that's the whole crazy wheel that the society is in. they just can't take the pressure. It's not their fault, it's all coming from traditions, and the society as a whole etc.
Overall, it's a unhealthy obsession I agree, even I have to fight a lot with my parents because they carry the traditional asian way of thinking, while I'm more westernized But as a matter of fact, education is very important, because you need knowledge in life, and it's very sad that many people here don't take it seriously. Wisdom is underrated here I guess. But you will never see someone who only has a bad high school degree can get a job in Google
It's true that education is important, but overall knowledge isn't obtained purely through academics. Unfortunately, that kind of mentality in some cultures can't easily be changed when it's pretty much tied into their tradition and values.
That's such a tragic situation. The father didn't mean to and it's just an extremely unfortunate event.
What I can see is that people here don't just get how such a culture arises. Places like China, Japan and India are so education intensive because in these places a good education is the deciding factor in quality of life. The disparity between the people who are at the top of the chain and those who aren't is one between a comfortable life and a life of struggle and abject poverty. Your rankings determine the quality of your higher education and that determines the quality of employment.
You have families who have had to struggle to get by and whose hope for their children is that they don't have to live the same life. The only way to elevate yourself is through education. And with a billion strong population, with countless others in the same situation, competition is crazily intense. That's where the intense pressure develops. Parents want the best for the future of their children and the family, while the children feel the burden of being their hope for the future.
Poor girl, feel so sorry for her. Couldn't he tried another aggression method instead? I see they're obsessed with pupil's results and I know they're extremely strict and ambitious with their children but anything that involves violence is either extremly unhealthy or they don't know better from their own childhood. Either way, probably the Florida in terms of education.
