There was a study done in the UK recently http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...light-616.html and looking at the comments most people seem to believe that men will quickly be looked upon as pedophiles if they were to help. It's really sad tbh. I don't know why the US and the UK seem to be more sensitive on these issues compared to other countries.

I think the question is: oppressed in comparison to who, and in relation to what?
Extreme views to either side are always wrong, the truth is always somewhere in the middle between two parties who have such strong convictions towards either side of the argument that they feel they must argue their own view on the topic.
There are very restrictive and harsh expectations towards men just as much as towards women, only in different ways. But unfortunately that's nothing out of the ordinary. We all carry burdens like this, including men.

Men are absolutely oppressed. The greatest example of such oppression (at least for the US men) is that we all must sign a contract at 18 saying that should there be a war so devastating that a draft is necessary, that we have the chance to be picked to fight in the war. Now, we don't have to sign said contract, however, if you don't, you can be denied scholarships, entrance into colleges and even be imprisoned.
Another example of course is the fact that we are deemed as, if not expected to be the courageous, intelligent ones of society. We are also supposed to be these cold beings that are only interested in a hit & run. Which leads me to the third point, we are always deemed as these hypersexual, wild beasts.

Agree. This seems like institutionalized oppression too?

It's men who are minorities (racial, ethnic, religious and so on) who are truly oppressed more so for who they are and not what they abide by when it comes to gender.
So in black and white terms men themselves CANNOT be oppressed as long as they are the ones in power. Women are minorities in the power scheme. It what ways are men oppressed? And don't tell me gender roles, that's not something just makes experience by females too in much worse ways. I can't think of a thing that's purely sex based oppression.

While things such as adhering to gender roles and whatnot exist, men are not oppressed in the same way females are oppressed. It's the same thing as the race issue. Just because you're white doesn't mean you can't experience racism at the individual level but you will never face institutionalize racism. Very often, Men are oppressed as a function of the sexism and misogyny that is intended for women.
For example, expression of emotion is viewed as weak and negative. It is possible that a man could be ridiculed for being emotional because it doesn't fit the norm but that is inherently misogynistic. Expression of emotion is tied to females and female traits are regarded as weak and negative. Men will never have to face the discomfort females do
edit - tl;dr MEN ARE NOT OPPRESSED BECAUSE OF THEIR GENDER

In a way, I do agree with this. I your points and where you're coming from.

No, I would, but that's an example of oppression against gay people. I didn't say that men never face oppression under any circumstances, but men aren't oppressed specifically for being men.

This. Men in general aren't oppressed badly, it's the feminine ones that are.

I'm a feminist and I'm a strong advocate for the equal treatment of women, so if you would like to discuss women's plight then I'm willing to do that with you all day all night all times of year, but in another thread at another time

I just don't think I'm a fan of the phrasing 'male oppression'. Bringing up female oppression was perfectly valid for the purpose of showing how incorrect it is to appropriate a word and apply it to males, where it's otherwise used for much more serious and pertinent issues.

I still think a good example would be men that have jobs that pertain to young children. But i guess it doesn't count since it's not institutionalized oppression.

Uh no, the stigma that men were supposed take care of their women while the women sat at home and made babies was instilled from the Bible, which was supposedly the world of God (a man). Chivalry was also indoctrinated by men in the Middle Age. It was the law... which was started by guess who? Men, the Aristocracy to be specific. Women didn't have any power.

men are almost never awarded parenthood of the child unless the mother is borderline suicidal in divorce proceedings.
men are never taken seriously as rape victims.
men are expected not to display emotions or else they are unmanly.
this goes on and on.

As I said, in a case of a divorce, mothers are more likely to get a custody over her child. Isn't that institutionalized oppression?

I do think men being required to forcibly sign themselves up for a draft at 18 is disgusting and a form of oppression as well.

So I'm not a male because I hate sports, I am in tune with my emotions, and I don't follow the standard code of being a male in society? That's amazing.

Exactly. Women are not oppressing men, they have a lack of power which is what makes them minorities.
Everything people are pointing out to support their argument for oppression seems funny. When it's the men who makes these things, so you all are saying "men oppress themselves".
