The fact that this is from the Netherlands isn't surprising.. their humour is just built on racist slurs.
If you watch one of the popular shows in there, it basically insults the Antilles and middle eastern and they brush it off as humour...
and more recently, they still want to fight that zwarte piet isn't racist...
That country is something else.. One of the main reasons that I could never live there.. They just have a sick sense of humour, and if things like this is passed as being ok and not racist, I obviously made the right decision to not live there
But it was the DEFINITION OF FUNNY. To me racism is thinking less/wishing harm/doing harm to people of other races, nothing else, especially not making a joke... People who call racism for every joke that is made are just butthurt if you ask me... No one is on the fence when people make a joke about blondes or ask you what a canary bird and gays have in common and the answer is **** on their stick, I mean
I can't believe some of you don't see this as racist and are defending him
In about two minutes time he manages to make a Chinese food joke, a Chinese accent joke, another Chinese food joke, tells the contestant he looks like a scientist, makes a Republic of China joke, and then, after the contestant left the stage, tells the audience in Dutch that he "looked like a Chinese food waiter."
If he had made one joke and had been lighthearted and friendly about it, it would have been somewhat acceptable (though still potentially rude and racist). It's fine to ask someone about their ethnicity or to talk about it. The female judge asked how you say "yes" in Chinese, for example. This is one way you can still talk about the contestant's ethnicity without being racist. I understand that this is Holland's Got Talent and there isn't as much representation of minorities, but this is still a singing competition so why is his ethnicity even relevant? The answer is that it's not. It was EXTREMELY rude and completely asinine the way this judge repeatedly made unfunny jokes about the contestant's ethnicity even though his fellow judges were clearly uncomfortable, the only laughter he garnered from the audience was laughter directed at him, and the contestant completely $HAT all over his expectations.
Just as an aside, it is quite disturbing how singing competition judges will pre-judge contestants based on their appearance (this includes their age, race, gender, weight, etc.) and then be blown away when they can really sing. They always say things like "I was not expecting this to come out of you" to the contestants as if it is some compliment.
Yes, there are many times when people will call things out as "racist" when they're not, but this is one of the few times where it's so direct and overdone that I honestly cannot fathom how anyone could not see it.
Racism is not just using verbal slurs or doing physical harm to other people with racial motivations. It can be seen on an individual level and a systemic level; it pervades our society and influences, even subconsciously, how we treat each other and judge each other. This video/situation is a blatant example of racism from one individual, but I think we should also recognize how our preconceived notions of other people based on their race (or gender, or class, etc.) affects what we think of them, even before we are consciously aware of it. We are a product of all of the media and culture we have been exposed to, and acknowledging this fact allows us to think about it, question it, and challenge it.

What show are you talking about? How do you know "Dutch humour is based on racist slurs"? Are you Dutch? Do you speak Dutch?
There are lots of people who don't think this is "right" or "funny". Many people here have said the same thing. I just don't think it's that much worse than judging people on other things than their race. Being cruel about someone's looks is just as awful to me.
And of course he won't be fired. If the network didn't like it they could have edited it out (which I think they should have).
Omg. I'm asian myself and I get a lot of asian jokes from friends (and sometimes, even people I don't know like when I'm at work from customers). But it's usually just once and then we laugh it off. That guy was throwing racist jokes after another. Even his American collegue, Dan Karaty, was shocked and appauled.
Don't act like the UK is a better place.
They let people drive over cyclists and let them get away with it unpunished. And the media put them even on a pedestal.

Yes I have been to the netherlands, and yes I speak dutch.
I am aruban, I know how you all treat people from the antilles.. I hear my friends complain all the time about how you all think they are dumb, and how they live in huts, and how they won't be your lab partner because of the fear of a bad grade..
I mean, I don't think that all of the netherlands are like that, I have a good dutch friend who treats me so well, but there IS a struggle much more bigger for antilles compared to the states and Canada... They treat me here in Canada so well, compared to when I hear how my friends feel in the netherlands
Well thats was awkward.
I can't believe people are defending this, in what kind of world it becomes right to say things like this
I'm not Asian but it's offensive, just see the face of the contestant after each "joke" you can also see that the other judges were uncomfortable..
So am I, so I don't get what dyou're not understanding... there was nothing wrong with the 'that's ok' comment, you are just looking for racism there... The Dutch subtitle did make it rude though.... What's wrong with saying that's ok? It would be my response if I was expecting some long ass name I couldn't pronounce and it's that short and easy to pronounce + she could easily mean that she had enough info and he could start, not even referring to the name, just like 'ok, fine, we're done, you can start', English isn't her first language, I mean..
Get fired? You are clearly not familiar with our culture.. he's in 5 different tv shows/programmes a week because of these jokes... Shows with him and his rude jokes get one of the highest ratings in The Netherlands Channels basically fight who gets to put him under contract
Don't get mad on Ophra he seems intelligent but is for certain not open for our European humour.
Hey, it's that guy from So You Think You Can Dance.
See, the problem with jokes like that is that those thoughts are present in the speaker's mind, but are played off as jokes. If the speaker weren't racist, those thoughts wouldn't have entered his mind at all.
And that applies to all degrading jokes.
No, this doesn't apply at all.
He shouldn't have kept making remarks, but saying someone's racist just when a 'joke' about a random race or gender comes to mind is just wrong.

First you say we all treat people from the Antilles badly and then you say you don't think all of the Netherlands are like that. Which is it? I'm sure there are people who treat people from other countries badly over here, but I don't think we are the only country. I do hate the way people like Geert Wilders try to create tension between the Dutch and people with another background.
I would still like to know which show you think is so racist. I seriously have no idea what you're talking about.
EDIT
That fragment wasn't showing when I reacted. As far as I know he's making fun of his own family. He said so himself. Basing this character on different people he knows. I thinks it's ridiculous to call that proof of the Dutch liking racist humour.
dude.. they were clearly degrading him on stage, making him a laughing stock. He's standing there taking his place on the show seriously, he should be taken seriously. Not patronized because of his race with a "side of rice". You're just playing devil's advocate
Perfect post.
Lol @ ppl saying that this is humor. The guy was clearly being put in the spotlight and was very uncomfortable with the supposedly jokes.

That's only a stereotype feeded by the media and that you only believe when you're not well educated or brought up. Normal thinking people know better. Sadly there aren't a lot.

Obviously not everyone in the netherlands are like that.. I mean, it is usually a few that have the bad seed compared to the rest of the netherlands.. But the Netherlands in particular has me struggling when none of my aruban friends can get a decent dutch friend. They all tend to stick with other people from the anitlles. And especially when my friends struggle to get a lab partner that treats them well, I raise the question how the dutch feel of the antilles.. Are they seriously not well educated enough to know we are pretty well off? They have us colonized, they should at least be educated on the islands...
How is a show like that ok? It further stereotypes that us anitlles are dumb.. It frustrates me knowing that many people would get this impression from this show, and you can't tell me that this isn't affecting the viewpoints of the dutch!!! This shows goes off with no real trouble there.. But if this show were to be played in the USA, I can't even imagine the blacklash!
Edit: And now my dutch friend basically wants to argue that the dutch got talent video isn't racist
ughhh, just after I defended her too about her being one of my good dutch friend
