What's poppin', groupies?
Tis time for another one of my beloved countdowns; this one focusing solely on my top fifty favorite music videos of all time.
I first got introduced to music videos, at about age 8, through what was then THE ONLY means of being "jiggy", MTV. Back then, I held that channel near and dear to me, since it still hadn't been infiltrated by rich, spoiled California kids and their nonexistent problems [ZOMG! MOMZ! U PaRK3d My M3RCEd3Z @ MM FrM WH3rE I WNT3D IT! NOW MY SW33T 16'z TTL RUIN3D!]
I digress. In the last ten years, I have been exposed to many different kinds of music videos, some fitting the accompanying song to a tee, and some SO FAR away from what you had envisioned that I've been literally blindsided by the end of them.
The following fifty music videos are the
creme de la creme of about a good, say, million[?] that my eyes have had the pleasure of seeing. I'm pretty sure some of you have seen at least a couple of these before, some as recent as two years ago and some made popular before I was born. Some of these works of art will make you laugh, some of them will possibly bring a tear to your eye; some will leave you with your mouths open in sheer bewilderment and some [a total of two, to be exact ] might scare the **** outta you'se. And without futher ado, Chris V3$$3L. presents
ZOMG! No "Beautiful Liar?!": My Top Fifty Favorite Music Videos of All Time!
Today, I will be doing videos #50-46.
50. Avril Lavigne "My Happy Ending" (
Video)
Okay now, okay now.
Before everybody leaves and decides that this list has no credibility whatsoever, let me agree with you. I know Avril is pretty much a fake, and I know that this video has no artistic integrity at all. The ONLY reason I chose this video to make the list because it hits so close to home; Williamsburg, Brooklyn, to be exact. I was raised there until age 7 when I moved to Queens. The thing is, that I feel like I'm in the music video myself...like I can make a detour and just go back to Ross Street where I used to eat peanut butter sandwiches.
This video was filmed on an avenue called Broadway, and I can identify practically everything in it. I know the court behind that project building where they were playing basketball; I know where that Payless Shoe Source is for that split second outside that apartment window; I know that movie theater (now-defunct) that she's sitting and dancing in. Make fun of me all you want, but there has never been, nor will there ever be, a video that touches my heart like this one has. Michel Gondry, Mark Romanek, whoever...try. But you shall fail.
49. Backstreet Boys "Larger Than Life" (
Video)
Yes, you can leave now.
I think this video was the best to come out of the boy-band era, hands down. I remember being punished at the time of its release and that I had to have my aunt record on a blank VHS for me because I knew it was going to be that great. I was right, of course.
The boys somehow get transferred from the airport of "I Want It That Way" to this high concept, million-dollar budget video where each of them has their own little galactic setting leading up to, of course, the dance sequence.
I remember on Pop-Up Video once, those little arrows were pointing out all the expenses of this and when they got to a scene with Howie, the arrow read
"Mop-N-Glo: $5." I nearly died.
48. The Bravery "An Honest Mistake" (
Video)
I friggin' love everything about this video, from the black, white-n-yellow color scheme to that elaborate domino-contraption that looked like it took
days to assemble, to the extremely anti-climactic ending --- it's just all around fire. A must-see (along with everything else after this, of course.

)
47. Jimmy Eat World "Pain" (
Video)
In this video, a heartbroken man puts himself through "Jackass" calibur-obstacles, which you find out as the video progresses, cause pain
miniscule to that of the loss of his girlfriend. It isn't until the very end of the video where our protagonist's true love returns to him, that all other sources of pain become relevant again. Those twins sure did knock some sense into him, now didn't they?
I cannot personally attest to having felt anything remotely close to the feelings this guy shows, but if I ever find true love, then I guess my immune system is indestructible, eh?
46. Green Day "Jesus of Suburbia" (
Video)
This video, for the 5th single off Green Day's
American Idiot, would 99.9% likely not made the cut had it not been for that specific scene in the bathroom. I'm not going to go into further detail, just watch if you've never seen. Even if you know what I'm yappin' about, watch it again.
But
DON'T try that at home, kids. 7-11s are always safer bets.
