So true. Not trying to be sexist here, but mainstream female artists (Katy, Gaga, Carly Rae) seem to be far more generic than mainstream males (Bruno, Kanye, Gotye) yet the Monsters criticize everyone for being generic. Tbh, "Applause" is one of the most generic dance songs I've ever heard. "Gorilla" is one of the most unique pop songs I've heard in the past few years. But ATRL'ers will have their own opinions.

A big part of it isn't the music. It's the persona. The whole pop girl image is something we idolize. Or at least find interesting. Pop girls take the time to craft a persona, hire a stylist, and are natural divas. They are more charismatic and command the spotlight.
Straight men have never been good at any of these things. Why are all the creative positions in the music industry occupied by women and gay men?
