Exactly, most album sales come from the GP and not from one's fanbase, the more the GP is aware of your latest work (this is what singles are for), the more they will buy it.
It's all about being connected with the outside world really, the fans are there to provide more awareness and for a good start, but from there on, it's up to the GP.
