Taylor released the average Max Martin pop song as a lead single, had her face plastered over everywhere possible to promote, appeared on multiple award shows, and opened with 1m.
When Taylor releases something non mainstream and gets those numbers then your argument will make more sense.

I've only seen one Papa Johns in my lifetime and it wasn't in my state. Domino's, Pizza Hut, Papa Gino's all eclipse it where I'm from so that's why I assumed it was generally irrelevant. I guess I was wrong!
I don't think Taylor would've pulled in those huge of numbers without all of the promotion, I give you that. But I truthfully think that Taylor would still sell over 350k+ without a single, album art, or promotion. Her fanbase is bigger and more dedicated than Kanye's, although his numbers are still impressive. While we'll never know, I don't think we can say Taylor wouldn't do this because I think she would and I think she'd still open bigger, but that's besides the point.
(And are we going to pretend like Kanye's lack of glamor for this CD is actually not promoting it? The fact that there is no album art only makes people talk about it more. I saw tons of articles about it when it first came out. Not to mention, I've read stories on here about how people have been in stores wondering what it was. I think in a way it's still promo...just unconventional.)
