I don't think Lady Gaga necessarily copied Rihanna. But this is the sort of threads Lady Gaga fans start about other artists supposedly copying her, so hopefully her fans can see how stupid it is now.

Rihanna was one of the first people to have dance-pop hits in years (and she did it a long time before Lady Gaga), but I think the dance-pop revival would've happened anyway because Nelly Furtado and Justin Timberlake were still going to release their albums.

The problem with ATRL is this sense of one pop artist being the end to all end. Most of the current generation of pop stars aren't that influential or have a significant impact to pop culture. Some are still growing as artists..these type of questions should be asked 10-15 years down the road.

I'll say that Rihanna, Gaga, and a few others are in the top tier as far as conventional popstars are viewed.
