Britney sold tons of albums and had cultural impact with BOMT, but Gaga's tours were massive (her first arena tour was massive and one of the highest-grossing of all time). Bad Romance and Telephone had tremendous impact, especially the latter. Telephone premeired at 10:30 that night and the next morning when I went to school, EVERYONE was talking about it + had it on their iPods + were watching it in class. Also, Gaga has more critical acclaim and industry respect than Britney had at the same point in her career.

While I agree gaga had more respect, she was NOT and I repeat NOT touching Britney at all in her prime. Britney was on a whole nother level of fame gaga didn't and most likely won't reach at any point in the future. Do you not remember how astronomically huge BOMT was, how a lot of later female pop stars (christina, jessica, mandy etc...) were modeled and compared to her. Britney was the it girl and a bed full of controversy from the vma performances, relationship with justin to the music videos (toxic & im a slave 4 u). Hell these same videos are heavily referenced/remembered/considered iconic and played till this day years later. Britney from 1998-2004 was just simply and just unbelievably unstoppable, had she not had her breakdown today not even gaga would be in the same class as her. And this is coming from someone who's not even a big fan of britney, you must of been too young to see britney in her prime
