Have people forgotten just how MASSIVE Kelly's "Breakaway" era? If I recall, the album stayed Top 20 on Billboard for a whole consecutive year. All 5 singles from that one album are still radio mainstays. "Since U Been Gone" eclipses the success of any Katy single... and that's just from one era.
Let me see where Katy is in 5 years, when the little girls who love her have all grown up, and see if she can still pull out platinum records.

well Katy spent over 2 years in the BB top 10, and the album is still in the BB 200 in its 2nd year and about to spend its 3rd year this august something unprecented and something very big. im not even gonna mention all of her achievements this era because it will take me until tomorrow. no one is undermining kelly's success, they just think that Katy had a better legacy and didnt people also ask where Katy is gonna be 5 years later, 5 years ago? Katy's biggest hits IKAG,HnC, most of TD singles are still relatively new and the effect of the singles on the future generation still wont be felt because as i said they're still new
All Kelly has going for her the connection with AI, which has faded so much. People no longer think of KFC when AI comes on. The show has just changed so much. Help Ryan Secrest and past judges are more iconic to AI KC is now. Kelly does also have a few well remembered hits, but they're all break up hits. She doesn't show that much versatility lyrically as Katy does. Finally, Katy is in so much pop culture than Kelly is, Smurfs, songs in movies, hosting SNL & EMAs, perfume etc.
Kelly's exploration in genres goes far beyond just dabbling in a little country. I mean if you were to pick out a song from each record, you'd see a switch from from R&B to Pop/Rock to Rock to Pure Pop to Country and so on.
I mean just listen to these songs right in a row ...The Trouble With Love Is - Gone - Chivas - I Want You - Hello - Don't Rush.

Right...."Hot N Cold" alone was bigger WW then any Kelly single, let's not get started on IKAG, CG and Firework....SUBG was NOT that big.
Katy is a hit maker but Kelly will always be more critically acclaimed and rememebered for her voice.
Too many ATRLers and ESP Katy Stans focus on numbers too much. And I highly doubt Katy will be relevant 20 years from now. Her hot looks will fade, what will she have left? She isn't known for her voice or performances. Sorry (not sorry)

Barely relevant? Just because you don't follow her doesn't mean she isn't relevant. She's up for 4 Grammies this year if that answers any question on relevance.
Katy had a more successful and prosperous era, but numbers and hit singles don't make a legacy. Critical acclaim and a notable talent does. Katy doesn't have either yet IMO because she's not known for vocal talent or performer talent..just catchy hit singles produced for the radio that everybody jams to. Nothing else
Anyways it's too early to tell right now because Katy's career has just started and its going in the right direction.
But if you want to talk about legacy, think about endurance and imagine 20+ years from now when all the current pop stars are old and brittle. You need to have a voice or performer's talent to stay relevant at 40+ years old because the whole sex-image, gimmicks, and relationship hype is not going to help maintain a positive relevance enough to make a legacy. Katy has yet to truly prove either, but Kelly will always have her voice no matter how long ago her peak era was or how obese she gets.
