as far as "empowerment anthems" go, this was by far the most insipid — even more so than alecia beth moore's — from the cringe-worthy screaming of "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger" to its lame, generic pop-rock sound, which completely washes out the personality it could potentially retain. i'm not gonna pretend she wasn't one of my least favorite artists in the first place. because she's all kinds of uninteresting: her rehashed music, her persona, basically everything outside of her vocal ability is. this song didn't help that either!
another song from the same artist: get up (a cowboy's anthem)
this song is so bad that it's worth a listen and a laugh (maybe not really): the chorus is just hilariously bad. unfortunately it is not eligible because it was not properly released. it wouldn't be eligible anyway cuz my countdown says "10 worst hits," though! proven by catch my breath, which doesn't even sound like as a novelty song as this one, its chart position.
since the slayage of her flawless debut lp on a mission, i was a lot excited about her free extended play danger. only containing four tracks that doesn't allow for any misstep, it sure did not disappoint.
even though i find the opening track "aaliyah" (quite a bit tbh) weaker than her singles from her debut — as it doesn't really touch the pop perfection of "broken record" or the fresh and arresting capture of club sound in "katy on a mission" — it still delivers, and makes sure that baby katy's a noticeable new talent if the flawlessness from her previous material wasn't enough.
let me not forget how glorious jessica her vocal delivery is. a certain special, mystic vibe into it makes the track even more magical, and even more appropriate as an aaliyah tribute, because that's what made her music so captivating. i certainly wouldn't be hesitant to admit she stole the scene from my favorite recent british act!
Aaliyah is everything. I agree it's not as instantly killer as the singles from her album but there's still an incredible greatness about it (also because Jessie is featured on it), and that applies to the whole EP. I'm disappointed it only has four tracks tbh.
