#21 - Uncontrolled (Namie Amuro)
Okay, while I may not be the biggest fan of hearing an entire album before it’s released, the four singles featuring nine of the thirteen songs did not deter me from hearing this album (even though I kinda already had...). Namie has always been an on and off for me; one album will be a blast to listen to, then the next one will be a snore, then a single from her will catch my ear, then the next single ends up being worse than her worst; but this album was an on. Aside from the amazing singles that are “Go Round” and “YEAH-OH”, done, for Namie, exceptionally well in full English on the album, “Let’s Go” is possibly a classic for me. “NAKED” and “Get Myself Back” are also in that boat. Again, I pretty much heard the entire album through the singles, but it was nice to revisit. Hopefully, we will get more of a surprise next time around.

#20 - Looking 4 Myself (Usher)
Usher is no stranger to delving into club records, then flipping the script and slowing it down for the R&B affiliates in his fandom, and this album was riddled with a number of club bangers. The first song, “Can’t Stop Won’t Stop”, brings you into half-dance-Usher, and half-grinding-Usher, while the next song continues that dance craze with “Scream”. While not my favorite songs off the album, they are definitely a perfect introduction to this album. But, by far, this album was my least favorite from him by having not many memorable hits like his album, Confessions, and for not being as cohesive as his 2008 album, Here I Stand. But songs like “I.F.U.”, “Climax”, and “Twisted” at least shows that Usher isn’t afraid to experiment and expand his reaches a little. Hopefully, next album will showcase a more cohesive and more hit-making Usher.
Quote:
“Where’s the Rest?”
Now, you might be thinking that if I have four countries worth of songs, that means four countries worth of albums. Well, almost and no. How like J-Pop only provided me with enough songs to cover at least 12 artists, K-Pop provided me with enough full-length albums to cover about 5 artists. And I know you must be thinking, “But a lot of K-Pop artists came out with mini-albums enough to make 10 top ten lists”. While a mini-album is a great way to focus a style onto one moment, it’s not enough to create an era. Especially, considering, that each mini-album pretty much can only promote one song from each.
If I was considering putting mini-albums with the rest, rest assured a lot of albums would not be making this list, but because they’re only 4-6 songs long, it’d be unfair to. Also, making a separate list would be unfair as well, since it would only involve two countries. So, instead of delving into the number of mini-albums that came from South Korea, I’ll just tell you about the two I was truly a fan of.
EXO-K came out with one of the best mini-albums of the decade, in my opinion. “HISTORY” was already the breakout song for me, but “WHAT IS LOVE” was almost like being back in 2004 when R&B was flourishing. This is what a boy band should sound like; it’s the breath of fresh air I’ve been waiting for since Day26 disbanded and became nothing but a memory. Hopefully, like many K-Pop bands, they don’t conform and change their entire styles to the point where it doesn’t even seem like it’s the same band and build more on these styles (“MACHINE” / “MAMA”) while still keeping the ballad side like all K-Pop artists. EXO-K is definitely a one-to-watch if MAMA is anything of a conformation.
The second was somewhat of a surprise. miss A’s Touch would have never gotten the time of day from me. The lead (only) single, at first, sounded like the mess of all messes from South Korea, but I’ve grown to like it more and more every listen. But, as basic as the first song is, the rest of the album is far from it. “No Mercy” and “Lips” might be the most innovative songs I’ve heard from a K-Pop girl group. “Lips” isn’t fully a club song, and “No Mercy” isn’t fully a gothic beast, but that’s what makes them so likable. miss A was never one of my go-to girl groups (actually, most K-Pop groups were never a go-to), but they are slowly, but surely, becoming one.
And, just as a mention, 2NE1 came out with one of the best songs of the year, but no mini-album. Hopefully, next year, they can be on this list, or even better the big list.
