THE YECA! I'm sad that this will be the final year-end from you, but after reading the rundown, it at the very least will be going out in style/with a bang/in a big way (choose your fav).
As for, PART ONE: First off, props to Orgy for having a song called "Grime of the Century." I love the Fiona Apple song, that Gaslight song was OK, you are right, I like the Soundgarden, and I like basically the entire RHCP album, so I like "Look Around." I'm sad that Dead Sara wasn't a bigger deal, as you are correct in that it is a great song. I heard it a few months ago, and it was everything that genre needs right now. Certainly more than Seether! Are Seether still a thing? If they are, they shouldn't be.
Looking forward to the NEXT 90!

The one and the same, though, as I mentioned, it's really more of a main project for lead singer Jay Gordon than anything now. Kind of like the Pumpkins are Billy Corgan's main project.

Well, admittedly, it's early. I'm not a big fan of the songs in that set, but there had to be 100.

Ryan, my dude, so great to see you start up the list. I remember thinking last year I wish you had finished your list, especially with the self-proclaimed TVOTR Two-fer, so it sucks I didn't know you had finished it on a blog.

Glad to see you return for the Best of! And yeah, I got way too swamped by last year's YECA and other things in my life. I did learn an important lesson, though, hence the scaled back YECA this year.

Dr. Spa-chemin! And yes, Seether are still a thing, though not as much as one as they used to be, so there's that. And I prefer "in style", because of the Dropkick Murphys song of the same name. /2011
Okay, going to get to work on 90-81 right now, so stay tuned!

The YECA: Top 100 Singles of 2012 (90-81)
Alright, it's time to rock and roll!
| Placebo
B3
#90s of the Past:
2011: Danko Jones - "I Think Bad Thoughts"
2009: Incubus - "Let's Go Crazy"
I got into this song WAYYYYY too late. As in, last week late. I wish that I had gotten into it a couple months ago when the video was released, because this song probably would have been top 70, at least. Alas, it makes the list at a relatively low #90. Placebo always has a place on my lists somewhere in any given year, especially when you factor in the success of previous singles "For What It's Worth" and "Running Up That Hill" on the YECA, and "B3" is more goodness from a band that doesn't know how to not have powerful and catchy singles. |
| Coheed and Cambria
Domino the Destitute
#89s of the Past:
2011: Skillet - "Awake and Alive"
2009: Mr. Hudson ft. Kanye West - "Supernova"
Here's another song that I got into way too late, though I had actually heard this song months before I actually got into it. It's still stunning that I DIDN'T get into this song sooner, because it's Coheed and Cambria at their most epic! Well, close to it, anyway. Nothing's ever touching "Welcome Home" in the epic category. But "Domino the Destitute" certainly has a sense of epicness to it, a sense of power and panache that has been missing from their recent albums, particularly the singles. |
| Red Hot Chili Peppers
Brendan's Death Song
#88s of the Past:
2011: Lil' Wayne - "How to Love"
2009: Chevelle - "Letter From A Thief"
I'm definitely slighting this song. Other than "Monarchy of Roses", this was my favorite song off of their disappointing album I'm With You. It still is. Why is it so low on this list? Well, when you take a look at the songs that follow this one, you may understand. Once we get to a certain point on this top 100, you're going to realize that ranking this year's top 100 was even tougher than ranking LAST year's top 100, and last year's top 100 was incredible difficult to rate. This beautiful song can barely make it into the top 90. What does THAT tell you about the quality of this year's top 100? |
| No Doubt
Settle Down
#87s of the Past:
2011: Christina Perri - "A Thousand Years"
2009: Kittie - "Cut Throat"
I remember being so pumped about the return of No Doubt when this song was first released. It sounded as if the band had never left. Gwen was just as spunky as ever, and the band sounded just as precise as ever. My excitement tempered after a little overplay (and a disappointing album that followed), however, and what I was left with was a solid comeback single from an old friend. Still solid, still plenty good, but not the super exciting track that I first discovered. |
| Chevelle
Same Old Trip
#86s of the Past:
2011: iwrestledabearonce - "You Know That Ain't Them Dogs' Real Voices"
2009: Pearl Jam - "The Fixer"
While "Same Old Trip" is a great song, and while it has many qualities that have kept Chevelle amongst the elite of today's mainstream rock bands, I can't help but feel as if it's lacking something. Pete Loeffler is just as awesome as ever, both with his drudgy guitar and his soothing vocals, but compared to another single that they released in 2012, it feels kind of old-timey and generic in comparison. Of course, generic Chevelle is still much better than generic (insert terrible mainstream rock band here), but it's still generic. |
| Garbage
Blood For Poppies
#85s of the Past:
2011: Lady Gaga - "The Edge of Glory"
2009: Rihanna - "Russian Roulette"
Here was another case where a band returned from a long break with an exciting single that made it sound as if the band had never left. Unlike No Doubt, though, I quite liked Not Your Kind of People. However, just like No Doubt, once my excitement for "Blood For Poppies" died down, I listened to the song some more and discovered that the song was merely a solid comeback single from an old friend. It still has a place in 2012 music, though, there is no doubt about that, and Shirley Manson remains one of the most wonderful frontwomen in all of rock. |
| The Gaslight Anthem
Here Comes My Man
#84s of the Past:
2011: Kasabian - "Re-wired"
2009: Green Day - "21 Guns"
Compared to "Handwritten", "Here Comes My Man" feels much more like a breath of fresh air. "Handwritten" felt like typical, carbon copy Gaslight Anthem. "Here Comes My Man", however, has a distinct sound that makes it feel as if it combined the softer, slower American Slang sound and merged it with the intropesctive feel of The '59 Sound With that amalgamation, The Gaslight Anthem created something altogether wonderful. So, why is this song at #84? Because I really only caught onto it over the last two weeks. Sad but true. But it's a marked improvement in the single department over "Handwritten". |
| Jack White
Love Interruption
#83s of the Past:
2011: Shiny Toy Guns - "The Sun"
2009: Dredg - "Saviour"
The first of four Jack White singles is also the first. It's a good song, don't get me wrong, and it has a soothing and soulful quality to it that not many other artists in 2012 can match. But yet, unlike the singles that followed, this song couldn't pull itself away from its Jack White-esque sound enough to stand out on its own. It's so distinctly Jack White that it winds up harming the song! "Love Interruption" was a great way to introduce us to the world of Blunderbuss, but it's also the weakest single from said album because of something that it has no control over. |
| Stone Sour
Absolute Zero
#82s of the Past:
2011: Kreayshawn - "Gucci Gucci"
2009: Matisyahu - "One Day"
If you've never listened to a Stone Sour song before, "Absolute Zero" is basically all you need to know about the band. Corey Taylor's second band (and, really, his first band right now) has a more mainstream sound, but one that still remains on the edge of being all-out metal. The Stone Sour sound stands out when compared to its brethren due to both Corey Taylor's vocals and the musicianship found in many of their songs. "Absolute Zero", though, is quite the generic Stone Sour tune. It's basically Stone Sour for dummies. That's not an altogether bad thing, but that does hold the song back a bit. |
| Adele
Skyfall
#81s of the Past:
2011: The Drums - "Money"
2009: Ladytron - "Tomorrow"
Confession time: I still have not seen Skyfall. And I probably won't until it is released on home video. I know, silly Red. But I digress. I have listened to the title song many times, mostly in anticipation of the movie that I never got around to seeing. The funny thing, though, is that this is one of the rare instances where I am able to separate the song from the Bond movie. This also happened (on a more awesome and epic scale) with the Casino Royale song, "You Know My Name". "Skyfall" is able to separate itself for one very simple reason: Adele. Her vocals remain just as breathy and as soulful as ever, and she's able to take an average song and carry it to new heights with merely her voice. |
|
|
And hey, would you look at that? 20 singles down in the first two days! Now, watch this die for a couple of days.
Seriously, though, the next set will feature songs 80-71. Among the songs in this upcoming set: The return single of a rock giant, the second (and inferior) single from one of my favorite recent discoveries of the last couple of years, a song from an artist that was just featured in this set, and a song that would have been much, MUCH higher if I had compiled this list a couple of months ago. Oh, and we also have to deal with the Best Game of 2012. At some point. Hopefully today. Maybe. Possibly.

I'm actually really lazy to listen to the whole Domino The Destitute. I like it, though. :-#
Settle Down and Blood For Poppies. I'm still unsure about whether to include them on the Top 100 or not.
Keep up the good work!
