I actually wouldn't be so certain with that claim. Adele only had a 65% lead on "Diamonds" at it's peak and it's already depleting. That was also on FRIDAY/SATURDAY, which would be the lowest sales point for Rihanna according to usual UK sales patterns in regards to their releases.
Therefore, chances are if they both had been released at the same time Adele might not have had any significant lead (if at all) and probably would've dropped faster than it too considering how long it maintained it's gap from the other songs and how quickly Adele's is depleting.
65% lead is pretty big you know
