The things is, BOMT was released over a decade ago, and everyone, from senior citizens to little 5-years olds, still knows the song. So I don't see your point when you say, "nobody remembers cares about BOMT anymore."

ATRL made you guys blind. BOMT is basically non-existent in non-English speaking countries. Call Me Maybe got that simpleness that even children from third world countries can sing along the chorus. I don't like it in the slightest bit but CMM is already a phenomenon thanks to its structure and social media/viral advertisement whereas BOMT remains a cute little nostalgic song remembered mostly by tweens.
"CMM" doesn't have the advantage of TRL, unlike "...BOMT".
BOMT didn't have the advantage of the internet(facebook, twitter, youtube etc) and it still became a cultural phenomenon that transcended time and space.
We know the song is massive worldwide and the cultural impact has been hell impressive. We know also it's vying to become a classic, compared to other legendary anthems or big smashes:
We know it's bigger than We Found Love, Hollaback Girl, Poker Face, Tik Tok
