It is kinda stupid, it's like listing Madonna not shaving under her arms as her main obstacle. Eh. Lady Gaga isn't so ugly that you could consider her making it despite her looks a great accomplishment. She's regular looking. It's a little alarming and funny that some of Gaga's own fans are using "she's not pretty" for her to win this poll too.

That's why people are voting for her. Duh.

"Oh, mommy, boo hoo, I'm not pretty! Me not being pretty must be so much harder than people living in poverty, eating out of trash cans, having an abusive parent, dealing with drugs, and being homeless! Being ugly is a bigger obstacle than all of those!"

Technically being 'ugly' would be an obstacle if you're trying to be a successful popstar. Even though Gaga isn't ugly

I voted Madonna.
Gaga's not ugly, but in a hyper-sexualized female pop industry it's very rare for an fairly average looking girl to succeed when so much of ones success is based on beauty and sex appeal. Gaga made it to the top with her natural talent and tremendous work ethic, which are both rare for many pop stars these days. In that sense, her not being stunningly gorgeous is an obstacle, but certainly I don't think it compares to some of the things Madonna went through.

Madonna.
Her mother died when she was a young child.
She has said that she always felt trapped in her conservative childhood.
Her family wasn't very well off.
She went to NYC with $30, and lived in ****** places for years before she found any kind of success.
While she was there, she was raped.
All of her musical equipment was stolen when she really got serious into music, and she didn't have money to buy more.
She was forced to pose nude for photographers and did some "adult films" for money (she turned that one around in the future though).
She was spotted by talent scouts and was taken to Paris to be a star, but she said she felt like a prisoner and had no control over anything, so she lied to them about her father being really sick and ran back to NYC.
She hunted down Seymour Stein to his hospital room, played him her demo and talked him into signing her.
Not to mention all the **** she's gone through since then; sexism, domestic abuse, losing several friends to AIDs (such as Keith Haring), people criticising her for adopting, her brother writing a humiliating book about her, etc.
****.

Nicki's dad was on crack and almost burned down her house with her in it, but besides Nicki, probably Madonna.

Madonna because she has minimal talent but stellar ambition. She was a critical joke in the 1980s yet eventually she became the most successful female recording artist of all time. She has a remarkable discography and has broken records. She now is the Queen of Pop. Victory is sweet.

Neither Nicki nor her lil brother was home at the time, they spent the night at a neighbor’s house. It still was a terrible act of violence no matter how you look at it.

Gaga wasn't even "ugly" before fame for normal standard and even in "Just Dance", "Poker Face", "Hey Hey" & "Paparazzi" she was pretty/cute. She would have never made it in the first place if she really was that horrible looking, the pop world being a very superficial business.
