Discussion: Why was Kanye's MBDTF snubbed at the Grammy Awards?

Like, when Nicki Minaj's verse comes in nearly half an hour into the album (I'm listening to the album yet again right now and am up to this bit; the first time I want to start rapping along) you realise how bland and lethargic everything's been up until then.

There's no doubt in my mind that the album was over-hyped critically. The critics spit out every conceivable positive comment. I read something about it being a greater achievement than music itself, whatever the **** that is even supposed to mean. But I still think it's his greatest achievement by far. It takes a lot of the best of what he's done in the past, brings in all of that amazing fantasy and focus, and packs it into a really quality dense album. It runs start to end like an experience, an emotionpicture, and does such a great job of blending a lot of sounds into something that comes off as timeless without even passing the test. Plus, his rapping is more enjoyable than ever for me.
The only bit missing from the record is the towering pop masterpiece a la Jesus Walks or Gold Digger.

This album wasn't meant to be animated and energetic though.
The same argument can be said about Take Care.

You really just called "Dark Fantasy" and "Power" and "All of the Lights" bland and lethargic?

This is not some contrarian, rare opinion. Many people do. Like, I can't even fathom enjoying MBTDF more than The ****ing COLLEGE DROPOUT, which has songs like 'We Don't Care' and 'Jesus Walks' on it, and is endlessly entertaining, humorous and full of creativity. So baffling to me.

I'm noticing that you can't listen to an album unless it's full of entertaining verses and humor. Basically, you don't have the control to listen to a "emotional" album.
OT, but you probably think Thank Me Later is better than Take Care right sis?

Introspective, gritty albums are great if you've got enough ideas and are interesting enough to make me want to listen to you whine talk about yourself for 90 minutes. Take Care is **** too.

Basically this.
Grammys doesn't necessarily award the "Best Album" all the time, but rather the "Biggest Album". Most of the time the NARAS does really overlook commercial success and uses critical acclaim. It's only for albums as huge as "21" (and within its genre), that the thought of it losing seems like a tragic ending to "music's biggest night".

And, for example, Fearless and Speak Now have more interesting things to say than MBDTF?

Both albums have Drake's lyrics and voice on them, and are therefore terrible.
By entertaining I don't mean fun and uplifting, I mean creative wordplay and varying your flow and suiting your voice to the beats.
I mean an album like this
which is at times bleak and depressing but always an absolute sonic riot.

We made it to page 4 without it. Good effort if you ask me. More interesting ways of saying things, yes. But that's enough about that.

I'm just curious. I don't care if someone likes Taylor Swift more than Kanye West, but I do think it's odd to say, of all things, that the type of navel-gazing self-reflection you find in her work is more creative and insightful than Kanye's.

From lessor publications.
Only 1 percent higher than Speak Now though. Interesting.

The irony when Taylor's entire discography is one repeated song throughout.

77 on metacritic doesn't lie.
You may want to stop picking and choosing when critical consensus is a justification in and of itself if you're going to come for Taylor!
