Black is a colour. "African" is to be of African descent. There are people all over the world with dark skin, not just those from Africa. When they say black, they are referring to their skin colour being dark.

There are numerous characters that are not stereotypical, they get rather interesting storylines as well. Derek on Criminal Minds, Olivia on Scandal, Laurence Fishburne on CSI, Lany AND Esposito on Castle, Laguerta, Angel AND Vince on Dexter.

Just to name a few.

In fact its the shows that cater to Black Viewers such as Tyler Perrys numerous shows that offer FAR more sterotypes then anything CBS has ever shown. Don't even get me started on House of Payne.

No. Black is not always referring to skin color. My mother, who is African American, is quite pale. She still identifies as a Black person.
