It kind of does. Being a gay icon is not about what you do for the gay community, it's about what the gay community sees in you. It's about who WE choose to idolize.
Under this lens, Britney, Gaga, Bey and Rih are all "contenders."
Why, historically, gay icons have uniformly been straight women is a question that still needs to be answered ....

Any way, Gaga is a gay icon because she actually puts the time and effort in to raise awareness and fights to have equality for all.

No sweetie, the second sentence is the definition of a gay ACTIVIST, an icon is someone recognized by a certain group of people immediately and Beyonce is that.

Everything she does is fake to me. She realized her music was appealing to the gay community and then she released Born this way. She's using them for money.

And Rihanna is not followed by a huge amount of gay boys, she has TONS of straight male and female fans.
The MAJORITY of Beyonce hardcore stans are gay boys and men as is Lady Gagas.
And there is a HUGE and I mean HUGE population of African American homosexuals, which I guarantee when brought down to a count would list the DIVALICOUS Beyonce as their main influence, she has influenced everything from drag queens to transvestites.

I hate the term Gay Icon most of them aren't even gay. It serves no purpose but to stereotype us. I wish gays looked up to the more intellectual people who support us then superficial singers

Like Britney didn't exploit the gays....
To answer the question: Gaga but the ultimate Queen of Queens is Madonna

We've already acknowledged that Beyonce has a huge gay following, but what has placed her as a gay icon through activism?
Rihanna isn't a gay icon, either, but to say she doesn't have a large gay following is kind of a lie.

Your logic alarms me.
I think Gaga and Beyoncé come the closest to where Madonna, Cher, Lauper, Garland etc. were in their time.

Activism is one way to become a gay icon, not the only way. Madonna, Diana Ross, Janet Jackson, Barbra Streisand, Cher, and Tina Turner are probably the most famous drag queen impersonations of all time and they are ALL gay icons because of their look and impact on the gay community during the 60's-80's, activism had nothing to do with it.

How did Britney "exploit" the gays? I even said she isn't but don't roll up in here with that ignorant ****. I love that some feel like the gays are that weak to the point where they can easily be taken advantage of and exploited for what ever reason.
